  • Earth Hour, Don't forget to turn out the light Saturday!!!

Saturday is Earth Hour, how many here are participating?

I'm going to have fun trying to convince my husband that the hockey game needs to be turned off for an hour...but off it goes!

This is the official EarthHour site http://www.earthhour.org/

    From Wikipedia:

Earth Hour is an international event that asks households and businesses to turn off their lights and non-essential electrical appliances for one hour on the evening of 29 March at 8PM local time to promote electricity conservation and thus lower carbon emissions.

It is promoted by World Wide Fund for Nature Australia (WWF), an environmental lobby group, and the Sydney Morning Herald. The first Earth Hour was held in Sydney, Australia between 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on 31 March 2007. The 2007 Earth Hour is estimated to have cut Sydney's mains electricity consumption by between 2.1% and 10.2% for that hour, with as many as 2.2 million people taking part. A second Earth Hour, in 2008, is planned to be an international event held in Sydney, many partner cities, and individuals around the world participating.

Thanks for pointing this out. I've never heard of earthhour before. I'll propose this one to the board members, aka family at dinner time, and see what they say. There's nothing on tv at 8pm anyways, and we have a lot of board games that the kids enjoy...besides, it's still moderately light outside here at 8 pm.

I think it's a great idea for families even just to sit around and talk, play board games, etc rather than computers, tv's.....

Here in Toronto it's big news..our downtown businesses are shutting off all the non essential lighting, even all the mcdonald's and hotels!

2 summers ago we were up at our cottage without hydro for 5 days after a tornado. it was intersesting. trying to find stuff to do especially at night..no music, no lights just candles...everything had to be bbq'd. Every night though the family would sit up and play cards, talk etc till 1-2 a.m. we made our own fun! we didn't have running water either since it's run by electric pump and all the food had to be kept in coolers. They had a limit on ice at the stores so it was hard..lost alot of food. Made me appreciate my electricity! We've since bought a generator though in case it happens again LOL.

We ended up having an Earth hour party out in the garage, in candlelight and with the woodstove going, had a couple of friends and our next door neighbours over. used the car stereo for music. Was fun actually..the tv didn't go out until about 8:20, took that long for me and my neighbour to convince my husband that we're out of the playoffs anyway so what difference.

From what we could see in the neighbourhood, alot of people took part. Local restaurants served all their meals by candlelight etc..and I noticed there were alot of families out for walks....was alot of fun actually.

Writing your relativity homework by candlelight can be pretty interesting. It was fun to actually use the recommended books for finding the information I needed and not to google for it.
