As I was making chicken thighs in my favorite pan, I suddenly realized I needed to go register the girls for school. I got the days mixed up from everything that I've had to do this week.
Out the door we flew, and good thing because we only had an hour and a half left to wait in line, get the paper work and hit two schools...it's not an easy feat with two girls, one in 7th grade and one in 4th who see everyone they know. Of course we saw ALL their friends and had to catch up and swap teacher names, locker locations, help locate classrooms and locker combinations, etc.
We got home, I took my key and inserted into the locked door of the house after being gone in a record time of one hour to get the girls registered for school that was the moment that I realized----I left the chicken cooking on the stove!!!
The race was on to open windows, turn on the fans, take the pan outside, and thanksgiving prayers were lifted for the lack of fire (and rental insurance, and the fact of not having to file a claim
), and only smoke rolling off the stove (while my dog was curled up under the couch until we came through the door).
The chicken was partially creamted---a bit of a burnt offering...so to speak (see, I told you guys I can burn or undercook food!!)
The moral to this story: if you're going to cook chicken thighs for dinner because it's the cheapest thing you can think of doing right now, make sure you turn the stove off BEFORE you leave the house!
You might have thought that I just tossed the pan and chicken in all in the garbage after being drowned in water. Nope. I took the top part of the chicken things that weren't burnt, and just left the pan outside to cool off...and then I'll throw the pan away. I wasn't about to waste the good parts of the chicken! No sirieebob! It tasted good too.
