  • Since she was mentioned...Oprah

Anyone feel remorse for Oprahs ongoing weight issues? I always relate to her frustration and its not because shes "Oprah" and " I love her show". I seldom watch her show because I work, however, I can sympathize with anyone with weight issues, because I have weight issues. However, a ton of people say they DONT feel sorry for her because she has the money and resources to stay fit and she keeps falling off the wagon despite all of the resources she has at her disposal. One has to admit...personal trainers, personal chefs, ....why cant she keep the weight off? At the same time, I know that if I were rich, I would send every last one of them home and eat a thick slice of vanilla bean cheesecake if thats what I craved. Besides, you cant buy will power...it just comes with time.

what are your thoughts? Is Oprah exempt from sympathy just because she has the money and the resources to keep the weight off?

I don't think she is exempt. I am not really into it. She is launching this "campaign" in January when absolute everyone is trying to cash in on the fact that people have been over eating in the holidays. To me she is just someone making money. But maybe I am too cynic (and I do not watch her show)

I don't watch her show much either but I do know that she was sexually abused as a child and, having been there myself, I know it can really screw you up mentally. So I can understand what it is that drives her to eat in spite of all the people she pays to stand around telling her what she 'should' do.

It's taken me many years to get past the abuse so that I could just deal with the weight. The fat is just a symptom of much deeper issues and it takes a lot more than diet and exercise to get over them. So I sympatize with her.

I just think it proves that no matter how wealthy a person is, or privileged, they are still "human" with the same struggles as the rest of us.

Let's not forget that she also has Hypo-thyroidism which I also have. It is a battle to keep the weight off when dealing with thyroid levels. I know the battle all to well.

That is a very good point.

I also agree that money can't buy the what I think of as 'mental peace' to always do what is best for you.

I feel sorry for her, but also her story scares me a little. I wonder if having once been overweight the majority of people are in for al long term cycle of yoyoing. I know the battle doesn't ever end - but it would be nice if there were more examples of people who have lost weight and kept it off for years and years.

NB I know there are some on the board! But I can't think of anyone famous...
