Kitchen Compost Bucket

So, one of the first things I noticed was that I was tossing away a whole bunch of compostable (yard waste) items. So I bought a kitchen compost. It's a SUPER-CUTE little bucket that sits on the counter (I line mine with biodegradable bags). The whole bag can just be tied up and thrown in the yard waste bucket, reducing your garbage. It's got a carbon filter in the lid to make it odor-free (these are replaceable). There are several designs at different prices. More cities are starting to provide pick-up for yard compostable yard waste, and the items that can go in them vary from city to city, but usually include egg shells, coffee filters and grounds, odds and ends from veggies.

Are you on the Atkins Diet or are you just trying to sell compost buckets?

I just started Atkins.

My post was true, since I've gotten a compost bucket since beginning the diet, I thought other people might also appreciate a way to more efficiently manage their waste.

I've always saved used coffee and filters, but yes, you're right. There is a whole bunch more trimmings and such when you are cooking with whole foods.
My "compost bin" is a bunch of adorable chickens who scratch through the stuff, add nitrogen matter and give eggs in return
And yes, I'm trying to sell chickens

I also use a kitchen waste compost bin with bags. The council come and collect them all every week which is great. It makes you more aware of how much you are wasting.

I garden, so I have always composted. I hate filling the dump with all that plastic and stuff that will take a billion years to degrade.

Last fall, I started worm composting. I have a 10 gallon container in a closet with about a thousand worms that eat up all my veggie scraps and gives me plenty of worm castings to use in my garden.

I'm moving this to the chit chat forum since it's not diet related.

Like Zarabelle, we have weekly (ours is mandatory) kitchen/compostable waste pickup with our city that is composted and reused in parks etc. they're called 'green bins' and it's amazing the amount of waste it diverts! everything from leftovers, to animal waste and soiled diapers can go in (they have a process to remove the plastics). Between that and our paper and plastic recycling, on 'other' garbage day I never put anything out..really what is left?

I'm sure my girls would LOVE your worm bin! I'd love a worm bin in the house, but we are so crammed for space as it is, and part of my kitchen and most of my den are taken up with incubatos and chickie cages

We also have blue bin collection which is all plastics, glass and cardboard and brown bin which is for garden waste. So between the green, blue and brown we do a lot of recycling ;-) The only things we can't recycle are certain packages and nappies (and we have quite a few of those in a week). I used cloth nappies with Georgia (who was potty trained very quickly at 2yrs). When Hattie came along, G was only 18m old and I couldn't keep up with the washing so she has been in pampers all this time. She is not interested in potty training at all so I may move her to cloth nappy pants in a few months (when she's 2.5yrs), that should encourage her!

Interesting that is almost exactly the same as ours...maybe your city is where Toronto modeled our recycling plan from! We have a green bin for compostable, blue for recyclables and our yard waste is picked up if put in large paper yard waste bags. We have a grey bin for everything else, but really..there's not much left after that! I rarely put it out.

I really hated it when it first started..but now it's second nature.
Interesting you can't put diapers in the compost. we are asked to collect the food/compostables in plastic bags, and then put it in the larger outdoor bin. They have equipment apparently at the plant that pulls the plastics, including diapers, out. They actually ask us NOT to put biodegradable bags in since they can't be recycled and the machinery doesn't differentiate so it causes problems at the recycling plants.

Congrats on doing the cloth diapers too. Not sure my stomach could take that!

It does sound similar! Most people use large sacks for their garden waste but there is an option to buy a brown topped wheelie bin which is much bigger and easier to push out. We have a gardener who comes every week and the bin is nearly always full - especially in the summer when he mows the lawn each week (it's collected every other week).
