  • Want an i pod...some questions

So I have never had an i pod and want one just for music while I'm working out. Saw some one amazon.com for $200+

Is that the normal price, if I just want one soley for music? I saw a few "generations"...don't know the difference.

Can anyone make a recommendation on a type/model (preferably one that doesn't cost too much)? Thanks!
    ~Lisa

Um, check out the shuffles. They start at $60... you might want to consider some sports headphones if the earbuds don't work for ya.

Apple products are fair trade ... the price is the price! You can get small discounts at places like Costco ... if you want to check the price, go to apple.com.

I have an iPod Touch, which I use primarily for calendar and contacts, and WiFi for around the house, and for a video podcast I have.

I have an iPod 160 Gb Classic for music and my audio podcasts.

      The Nanos are nice ...

It all depends on what you want it for. For just listening to music while you're working out ... the Shuffle would work fine.

I just got an ipod touch 1st generation a few weeks ago. I got it on Ebay for a great price! I bought it for the same reasons you are looking but I have come to enjoy the cool apps, videos, and WiFi even more. I have bought accessories for the darn thing at media discount stores because the Apple stores and Apple.com is more expensive. Ebay is also another great place to buy all things Apple.
Personally, I like my Sansa mp3 players better; the manufacturer is Sandisk. They're more reasonably priced and more user friendly that the ipod. I don't like having to manage everything thru iTunes as opposed to just plugging the thing in and doing the "drop & drag" thing.
Regarding the "generations" that just represents the newest model ipod. The 1st generation is the oldest and is probably the least expensive right now. Also the higher "the gig" (memory available) the more you'll pay. I think Apple worked out the "kinks" from previous models with each new generation. For instance: the 1st generation doesn't have an external speaker so you can ONLY hear the music with headphones. I know the 3rd generation has the speaker. (not sure about the 2nd generation)
I'm not sure how familiar you are with mp3 players but you really want to decide how much music you plan to have available to you. a 1G ipod will hold around 250 songs. If you're not looking to store a ton of songs then you might consider something with less memory and that will bring the price down quite a bit.My Itouch is a 8G and I'm already 800 songs into it and still going. But remember, apps and pictures take up memory too so it totally depends on what you're trying to do. Hope I'm not too long winded, but I just wanted to give you some good feedback...
        Happy Shopping...

Hey Lisa, thanks for starting this thread. I'm clueless about ipods too. Was thinking of buying one to transfer a lot of my CDs and my downloaded tunes. I use Rhapsody so not sure if I can do that. Anyways, I'm clueless when I look at them at the store. Thanks everyone for all the informative replies...I hope there will be more.

itunes took some getting used to for me...but I do like it. I got an iphone rather than an ipod or itouch because I wanted some of the features, plus I don't carry an ipod plus a cell phone. The iphone is alot like an itouch, but with a built-in cell phone. If you are just looking to play music, the nano is fine, the more expensive ones do other things like browse the web, be a personal organizer (like a PDA) or cell phone, etc. I got one with a ton of memory thinking I would use it...but I think I've only used about 20%...and its got all my music on it. (What can I say...I'm getting older and like my "classics" - I think I've purchased one new album in the last year)

Thanks so much everyone, for the feedback and info!! I have music from CDs I would like to mix together for working out...can you transfer CD music directly to an ipod (like from CD to tape)?

Not sure if I'll be asking for one for Christmas or getting one myself...going to Walmart today an will take a look at what's there.

Yes. You can rip your entire CD collection into Itunes. Quite handy! I'd suggest making sure you back up your digital music collection to a portable hard drive or even usb drive/cds. If your puter drops and you don't have that stuff backed up, well.... ugh.

I'd think a nano or a shuffle would be just fine for what you want to use it for. They're compact, have plenty of space to download literally thousands of songs to (for the nanos). You can put movies on the nanos/touches as well. The shuffles carry a lot of music, but you can't adjust them for playlists and what not. You load it with music and it just plays what you load. With the nanos/touches/etc , you can create seperate playlists to use (i.e. country/dance/workout/etc).

                I wouldn't be without one.

I think this is great advice. My family is split. My hubby is an Apple person..has an ipod and iphone. My son and I both have a Sansa. I really perfer our Sansa's over the Ipod (I will admit I like my hubby's Iphone over my LG touch). My hubby has the music he likes and puts it on his ipod, adds to it here and there and that is it. My son and I LOVE music. We are constantly adding music, trying new music, and we use Napster. So, we have MP3 players that are compatible with Napster and Rhaspody. We use Napster ALL the time and it is definitely worth it for us. My other son has an MP3 player that isn't compatible with Napster and what a mistake that was. That is just what works for us.
