Wow that is big news. Cadbury is such an institution - of course as a big chocolate lover I did my bit to support them.

I feel bad, it must have been my no longer purchasing chocolate that weakened Cadbury and let them be taken over. Sorry Cadbury!

Quite a few years ago the other big British confectioner, Rowntree's was taken over by Nestle. They promised to keep the Rowntree name slowly by slowly product after product has lost the Rowtree logo and been re-badged Nestle.

When I was a boy Nestle's chocolate was available, but it was always the purchase of last resort. They did have cast iron slot machines around - especially in Railway stations. As I said, a purchase of od last resort as Cadbury's Dairy Milk was always to be preferred.

And to add insult to injury, Nestle have insisted on French pronunciation and print the name with the accent. We always used to say Nes-sel's, and to me they will always be Nes-sel's.

I forgot all about Rowntree! Funny how when something is phased out like that you don't really notice, well I didn't anyway. They were the original makers of Smarties and Aero bars i think?

It's a french name so why wouldn't they spell it Nestlé, I'm not sure I understand? The is the correct spelling.

Many French words come into English and lose their accents - is "cafe" one?

A roadside cafe catering for truckers is a "transport caff", that is how we say it.

The German town Koeln (I can't type the umlaut easily on this English keyboard) we call Cologne, and the capital of France is Pariss not Paree!

The British adopted that chocolate bar as "Nes-sel", but when that French firm bought up British Rowntree, they buried the British name and the Anglicised form of their own name - or tried to.

              Understand?

I do not believe are not 'burying' the Brittish adoption of the name, Apparently the founder of the companies name was Henri Nestlé. Why would they not spell/prounouce it this way no matter what country they sell it in?

We too have Nestlé here, always have, and we do not prounouce it 'Nes-sel' we pronouce Ness-lee, I'm guessing there are other countries that do as well outside of Britain. I would imagine this is why they wouldnt' change it.

Just because they bought up a UK company does not mean they have to conform to the pronuciation they UK people created for it. Technically the company was founded in France and is named after it's founder.

we actually do not pronouce cafe 'caff' we would prounce it caff-ay (though we are a bilingual country), I think in the US it is the same. As an anglo-Canadian i also would not type this with the accent, but would still pronouce it that way.

IMO the 'British name' of the company sounds like an adopted pronunciation of the name by UK people and not one that was officially accepted by the company?

To me, them keeping the accent in the name stresses the proper pronunciation.

Nestle Strawberry Quick...Mmmmm one of my favourite drinks as a kid! I have a craving now lol.

As do Brits - the pronunciation "caff" is used only for the wayside transport cafe - it goes with the brown sauce and ketchup!

How sad that Cadburys has been absorbed... I have happy (though fattening) memories of Fruit and Nut bars....

Brian... Nes-sels was part of my childhood too! Now, I've caught the correct Nestlè pronunciation from living in Italy, but like you, in the UK it'll always be Nes-sels for me!!!
