  • Need a dessert that will stink up my house for HOURS

I'm selling my house, and my realtor suggested I bake something up that will stink up the house for HOURS in a good way.

So I went to the grocery store, and shopped around. Now here are my requirements:

    - Must be re-usable (take one cookie/whatever out, bake it, stink up house, then a week later I can grab another one, and repeat)
    - Must be moderately cheap
    - One of this item, baked, must be sufficient stinkage for a 2k sqft house

Any ideas? I'm leaning toward cinnamon rolls at the moment until somebody has like a really stinky cookie that will fill 2k sqft from the oven in the middle of my house.

PS: I cannot use candles. People can tell the difference.

    thanks!
    What I do:

Re: Need a dessert that will stink up my house for HOURS

        John,

I have been looking for the same answer. One realtor complained to my realtor that my house had a cooking odor!!! OMG! Forgive me for COOKING!
Forgive me for preparing and eating REAL FOOD!

Should I only buy carryout or only eat cereal or eat every meal at a restaurant for the past two years it has taken to still not sell my home!!!

        Vent finished....

        .....to answer your question-

1-Do NOT buy the Tollhouse cookie dough in a tub. I had this great idea that if I had a few hours notice of a showing, I could bake off 4-6 cookies to give off a great homemade cookie smell in the house, and keep using the tub of dough as needed next showing, that way I didn't have to MAKE cookie dough from scratch.

NOT...Goes to show how much crap ingredients go into these things. I had my husband go outside for a few minutes and then walk in and see how it "smelled" from the fresh baked cookies. He had to almost stick his nose on top the cookie sheet to barely smell the cookies. I tried it too, in case his sinuses were off. Same thing. There is NO AROMA of fresh baked cookies from what we could tell.

2- Without experimenting by baking a ton of stuff and tempting myself to the point of insanity by baking and throwing stuff away so I don't eat it, so far the best thing I have found is the "Jiffy" brand of Apple Cinnamon muffins. It's like 59 cents and you add an egg and a I think .25 cup of milk. I don't use milk so I use my heavy cream. It is cheap and quick. I think it is the cinnamon thing that helps the most.

We do not smoke, and we have no pets. Now it does not fill the entire home with apple cinnamon, we have 3700 sq feet, but you can smell it in the foyer when you walk in and of course in the kitchen. Not upstairs though. And it won't last for HOURS. I kind of have to bake about 45 minutes before I leave for the showing and "hide" the fresh baked muffins out of sight in a cabinet. So that way the aroma is still there when they walk in to see the house.

I have not tried actual cinnamon rolls yet. Let me know if you do and how it works out. I didn't try that yet, my spouse travels a lot and my will power is poor when it comes to sweets!

If there is something better I would love to know. Like you said, it needs to
        1- last a while
        2- not cost too much
        3- be quick and easy

        Good Luck!

Re: Need a dessert that will stink up my house for HOURS

When we were selling our house i stumbled upon an article that suggested sauteeing onoins for a sweet homey kind of smell. Personallly, i love the smell of sauteed onions and since i always use them it wasn't wasteful, just don't let them burn and don't add garlic > onions in oil or butter, lightly sauteed...mmmm.

I'd go with the cinnamon and cloves. maybe mull some cider and you can offer the folk a cup of hot ciper to sip while they look?

How about boiling some water in the microwave, add a few drops of vanilla...let it waft through the house...I am not sure how long this lasts, but it is cheap and carb free!!!
