  • Jaime Oliver's Food Revolution

I watched the first two episodes of this show tonight and WOW! I absolutely loved it.

In 2004, motivated by the poor state of meals in UK schools, Jamie embarked on an ambitious venture to educate and motivate others into eating healthy, nutritious lunches rather than processed foods. He launched a national campaign and an online petition for better dining. Jamie took the petition to 10 Downing Street and the British government pledged an extra £280 million to improve the standard of school meals.

Now the British chef is trying to do the same with the school meals in the U.S. starting with the unhealthiest city in the U.S., Huntington, W. Virginia. Fighting the system which REQUIRES serving two breads per meal and processed food rather than fresh is very difficult. I was amazed how the children in the elementary school did not know what any vegetable was nor did they know how to eat with utensils (they are not provided with eating utensils in school and almost none of the students knew how to eat with a knife and fork! ).

I will be very interested to see future episodes and really hope that others in the U.S. viewing audience will watch it and maybe...just maybe start to think about eating better foods.

Here is the viral video about Jaime's Food Revolution. Also worth viewing is his prestigious TED prize speech video on the same page.

Jaime Oliver's Food Revolution can be seen on ABC-TV and online.

        pizza for breakfast YES
I really loved the way that school adhered to the nutritional guidlines. Counting the pizza crust as two servings of bread and the processed french fries and vegetables.

It looks like Jaime gets in trouble again on tonight's show with the town's food police with a whole grain pasta primavera. Jaime explains that the grain requirement is met by the pasta and there are 5 (I think) different veggies in the dish. NOPE...gotta have some bread with that dish of pasta. And don't forget the side of canned veggie (corn).

          I look forward to watching.

Was that not the funniest thing. I roared with laughter. French Fries counts as a veggie but the pasta with all the fresh veggies did not. That was just a classic.
Made my day with enternaiment. Even better than the pizza counting as two servings of whole grains.

A much more heart warming episode this one. It was cute though.

              Re: Jaime Oliver's Food Revolution

I watched it too. I was so sad when they made him cry. He really truly cares about his work and wants to see children healthy, not just fed.

We are fortunate that here the school does offer a healthy menu. I couldn't believe some of the food I saw on that show. It made me sick to think those kids didn't have a choice to eat anything good for them. That attitude of vegi defiance begins at home though. If a kids parents don't eat them why would they.

I know lots of parents like that. I always offered vegi's to my kids from a very young age. If they didn't like them, I would give them some other kind until we found one or two we agreed on. I would then offer the original one a few weeks later. More often than not they would eat it. Childrens taste buds evolve through their lives so they need to try something more than once to determine if they really like it.

My children are really good eaters of a wide variety of foods. I am happy I could give them the option of eating foods that nourish them.

                Re: Jaime Oliver's Food Revolution

I grew up a loooong time ago when we didn't know we had options. Mom cooked whatever meal and we ate it. I guess I always loved veggies though...my parents told me that my favorite food as a baby was spinach. Ewww...ever seen that in those little jars?

Had lunch the other day at a local eatery that prepares homemade fresh foods. LOTS of options for Atkins. Anyways, the two young moms at the table beside me ordered a large french fry order for each of their boys (ages ~4 and 6). I could not believe it. This place had lots of healthy meals to choose from...even for kids. And these little boys sat there eating these large orders of fries. Nothing else...no meat, no veg. That is so wrong.

                  Re: Jaime Oliver's Food Revolution

Tonight is the season finale of Jaime's Food Revolution. Gee, that was a short season; I was hoping it would last longer I guess. I'll be curious to see what happens in the town and if Alice (the lunch lady) will ever come around to Jaime's side.

And what about the rest of the US and all of their school lunches? I was hoping he could really do something about them. We'll see.

Ohhh I LOVE this show! I was surprised that it was already going to be the season finale too!

I'm also wondering about Alice, and the rest of the schools in the city.

You can also watch it online on Hulu.com. However, epi #1 may have expired already, and if it hasn't, it will tomorrow since Hulu usually only goes back 5 episodes.

                            Re: Jaime Oliver's Food Revolution

Well, this series just ended waaay too soon. Jaime just scratched the surface of what is wrong with the school lunches and eating habits in general in the US.

It looks like the major problem is the USDA. Like that's a surprise. After all the work getting the school lunch ladies, the parents, the kids and the town to come around and embrace healthy, real food lunches, it's the USDA that continues to supply junky, processed food ignoring the requests/orders for fresh produce, meats and white milk. The USDA sends the processed chemical food and flavored milks (with more sugar in it than regular soda) because it is cheaper.

Oh, and then there is the problem with the elementary school kids bringing brown bag lunches from home. Gee, you would think that those would be healthier but NOoooo! What's up with jelly beans and potato chips as a lunch??? Or those nutritionally vacuous Lunchables? And one girl actually had some fruit but it was only pared with a neon blue jello cup for lunch? Hello??? What are these parents thinking?

Anyways, Jaime got the townspeople together and they all want change. The USDA and government won't cooperate. We need more episodes of this show!!!

p.s. Kudos to Alice the lunch lady. Never thought she'd come around. Good thing too as she IS a force to be reckoned with.

p.p.s. Jamie would like to take his petition to the White House to show the President and First lady how many people really care and ask for their support on healthy school lunches and educating families on healthy eating habits. Please sign Jaime's Petition.

I liked the show as well. We do not do school lunches like that here in Canada. But certainly we have the same problems with people eating processed foods and too much sugars for their own good. I hope this will change. I thought the last episode was hopeful but not overly so. There is still a long way to go and I think it would work if it was a grass roots movement.
