  • Wireless mobile?/INSTALLED

Keeping in mind I am not up on all that is new this may be a stupid question.

We will be traveling for about a month. Is there a way to keep the internet on my laptop? I know you can im and email to a cell phone so this must be doable. yes?
When I tried a search for satallite internet, everything I found needed a dish. Dont think we could put on of them on the Suburban.

If this is possible can someone point me to a link?

If you have a bluetooth enabled cell phone (lots of newer ones are) then you can get a fairly inexpensive blue tooth adapter for your USB port and use a cell phone for your internet connection. I don't know what kinds of speed you get, but as long as you have a dial-up ISP you should be good to go.

If you try to access ADBB over a cell (with the user graphics here) you're in for an expensive (and slow) browsing experience!

IMO, it's best if you find an internet cafe (like Starbucks or McDonalds) and hook up there.

Oh yeah...that's definitely the way to go. I thought she had to be in a truck non-stop though... You can do the Starbucks/Borders/Barnes & Noble/Hotel thing real cheap with a wireless network card and an account with the provider. I think most of the places use T-Mobile, but go find out.

I wasn't thinking about true back roads travelling. If there is a cell phone signal where she's travelling your suggestion on bluetooth has possibilities although there may be difficulties connecting (and staying connected) over a cell network. As long as her cell provider supports internet over wireless then why not check it out?

Look here for someone's experience with using his laptop over a cell network...

How to use your cell phone as Internet access point. You can get text messaging with almost any cell phone nowadays, and it's no great trick to forward email to that. The problem is that it's too hard to read that way: long messages get broken up, the cellphone doesn't have a great keyboard, and it just isn't worth the trouble.

Ok guys I called cingular. They hooked me up with unlimited online time using a data cable from my cell phone to the lap top. The cell phone has infrared but as far as I can tell the lap top does not (Compac presario 2200) I will pick up the data cable tomorrow whe we go to the city. If you dont hear from me over the weekend you know it didnt work well enough to come here.

Good thing you got the unlimited, I have cingular but no data plan and it cost me $6.13 to connect for around 22 seconds checking my balance.

Well I still dont know if it works because no one had a data cable that fit both my cell and my Laptop. I love/hate technology.

Yeah some Cingular GSM phones allow you to use it as a modem (look for the EDGE technology - it is fast as 128-256kbps connection to the Internet).

If you can't find a data cable, all hope is not necessarily lost.

You should be able to do it over a bluetooth connection if your cell-phone is bluetooh capable (the good Cingular GSM phones mostly are). You will probably have to buy a bluetooth dongle for your laptop, but that shouldn't be too expensive.

OK it was a long haul, but I ended up with an EDGE PC Card. I have an unlimited data plan costing $78 and speed faster then dial up. It will be intresting to see how well it works while driving.
                        Thanks for all the info.

                          wow , $80

i actually signed up for the tmobile wireless internet , i seriously PRAY that they will do MUCH more with this somewhat new technology of theirs , i do go to starbucks on a daily basis , and i go to borders quite often , but id like to be able to use my wireless internet at school when i go back , the internet on campus is damn awful , runs slower than ISDN , lol

ive got internet on my mobile phone as well , but sucks for browsing , the aol instant messenger is ok but still irritating to use

glad you found a solution , but 80 bucks seems kind of , i dont know , expensive

Yes, Apollo very expensive but worth the cost as I can now work while traveling. Would have cost me more to take the 5 weeks off we would be gone.
Went to the park for fireworks Monday night. I had a great connection
