  • Help!

OK, I need some help from the "techies"

We were given a computer at home and I'm having one problem with it that is driving me nuts! It keeps trying to do some kind of an auto update for Windows, it tries to run on its own and when I try to cancel it it takes forever, that plus it pops up numerous sessions of this "update" window. Anybody have any advice on how I turn the darned thing off?

    I'm obviously clueless.

    Re: Help!

if i MISS TYPE THIS go with what you think it says
click start and slide the mouse up to programs and all your programs should pop out slide the mouse to accessories and a bunch more programs should show up. move the mouse to system tools and another bunch of programs pops out. you want to click on scheduled tasks and windows update should be in there double click it and a box will appear with some tabs at the top selcet the schedule one and change the settings.

you can delete the updater program but you will have a hard time ever updating your system should a critical update be needed.

O.K., that didn't work because there were no scheduled tasks! Its trying to download Windows Premium 2000 and by itself and then it keeps telling me that I need to insert the original disc. It is so frustrating!

Where is Perry anyway, did he quit again? Peeeerrrry, I need you!

          Re: Help!

From the Microsoft website, it appears to be a part of Microsoft Office 2000. Try doing this to stop this annoying behavior: double lick on Start, then Settings. This will open the Control Panel. In the Control Panel, double click on Automatic Updates. When it opens, select Turn Off Automatic Updates, click on apply, and OK. Then close out the Control Panel and reboot your computer. If you don't see an Automatic Updates item in your Control Panel, you can double click on System (still in Control Panel) and then click on the updates tab in the window that opens. That will get you to the same place and you can select Turn Off Automatic Updates, close out everything and reboot. HTH.
