  • Anyone using FrontPage?

Are you using FrontPage? What software are you using for your website? I've used FrontPage and thought it was rather unwieldly. I have a free download available to me, but the site says if I enable Front Page, I end up disabling the ability to upload in other ways. Is it worth it to just go ahead with the frontpage install?

What program are you using to create/upload to your website?

i find frontpage user friendly, until you have to upload. depending on your host, they may not support frontpage extensions. it can be a little fiddly.
i use dreamweaver. im not a hardcore coder, so its a little more tricky than frontpage, but it has a lot more horsepower than FP.
    just my two cents...

      No no no, not Frontpage!!!!

I'm sorry if there are others who love it but personally I think it is absolute crap. OK, granted it comes "free" with the microsoft office package and is very convenient for first-time webpage designers, but if that was the case, why not do it in MS Word and go "Save As" and select *.htm or *.html document? It would serve the same purpose - while travelling I have quickly whizzed it up in MS Word and uploaded to our homepage.

Most of the time though, I'm with Stella. I use Dreamweaver and it is absolutely excellent!!!! It's good for people like me who like to fiddle with the code but if you don't know it, it's got great click-and-drag features and works pretty much like if you would use MS Word or Frontpage - only much better!!!!
So if you could get a copy of Dreamweaver (not usually free), that would be great. There are tuturials built into it that teaches you how to create basic webpages and build up from there.

I guess I don't really like Frontpage because it puts lots of crap code in the page and (I feel) it makes the page load up slower.

        Re: Anyone using FrontPage?

Thank you both for talking me out of that infernal program.

I had paid entirely too much for it new and hated every moment I tried to use it! I finally donated it to a local Cub Scout Pack, and I will be actually amazed if they've ever used it.

I downloaded the 30-day trial of Dreamweaver and look forward to trying it as time permits. Thank you both!

            Back away from the FrontPage

Professional web development is my job - and I use Dreamweaver in what's called "code view." If you've never touched code however, DW also has what's called "design view" which I'm sure you can get the hang of fairly easily!

And you're lucky, Macromedia just came out with DW 8, which included a whole slew of excellent improvements.

I guess gone are the days when you used a simple editor and hand-coded the HTML?

Not when you can create snippets and shortcuts to your heart's content in DW. I have my DW so customized to me that its going to be a nightmare to backup when I have to reformat. Why would I want to spend the time actually typing a tag out when I can set up any keystroke combination (ctrl + t, for example) to output it for me? The less code I actually have to write, the more time I save, the more I can produce, and therefore, the more money I make.

And then there are the benefits of code coloring, collapsing chunks of code at a time for easier skimming, etc etc. that makes my life a lot easier. So yah - for me, those days are long long gone, and I don't want them back!

                  Re: Anyone using FrontPage?

Ok, I have to put in my two cents here. I've been coding for about 8 years now, and have used Frontpage and Dreamweaver both. Between the two, Dreamweaver is absolutely the best.
That being said, today I use Notepad++ for my coding. I have long been a fan of hand-coding, and will probably continue to be so.
Whatever you decide to use, best of luck in your html coding.

                    Re: Anyone using FrontPage?

Yeah I'm like you also Christopher - notepad would also be the easiest tool I'd use for straight coding but if I have access to Dreamweaver, I'd have both the code & design view up and click & drag when needed, or code if I can do it simpler

There you go Cleo - Dreamweaver wins hands up!

                      Re: Anyone using FrontPage?

It depends upon what the website is intended to do or be. I have never found the Frontpage upload web to be particularly intuitive, and liked the simplicity of a simple FTP. Most of my current website are portals, blogs, or Content Management Websites of some sort, so I only need to design the templates and CSS, which is easy enough to do in notepad.

I have a free webpage that came with my DSL and it's been sitting blank for over 2 years because I don't even know how to begin doing anything with it. Does anyone have a link to the very very basics? Thanks!

I've not used any of these, but they're free, so worth a shot, in my opinion
