  • Jeepgirls List of Goodies!

This is my list of recommended list of web software and protection- free or open source. I work in the world of the internet, everything posted here has been used and is recommended.

    Anti-Virus
AVG Software- Free- Direct Link to Download: http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free...ee_362a652.exe

    Anti-Spyware

    AdAware-
    Free Edition- http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-...ml?tag=lst-0-1

    SpyBot Search & Destroy- Free
    http://www.download.com/Spybot-Searc...ml?tag=lst-0-1

    Hijacked Browser Help:

    Hijack This
    - Free
    http://www.download.com/HijackThis/3...ml?tag=lst-0-1

    Some really good must-haves FREE
    Mozilla FireFox Browser!
Forget about Internet Explorer, filled with security problems and getting hacked, + more spyware than you can imagine. Trust Mozilla Firefox, I use it for darn near everything... When you first download it, you may have to download macromedia flash for flash sites, it will prompt you if you need something. If it says ActiveX, avoid the site, most of that is malaware. http://www.mozilla.com/
On a personal note, after using Firefox, I reduced my spyware on my computer down to 1%. Firefox blocks it and doesn't let it load. Also has built in pop-up blocker. MSN Sites tend to not let advanced features work, cuz, well, firefox is MSN's competitor!!! Nah Nah!

Mozilla Thunderbird Email Client! If you're using outlook express, or outlook, you're playing with fire for security... Thunderbird delivers. Enjoy safe, fast, and easy email, with intelligent spam filters, quick message search, and customizable views. http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/

    Web Development: OPEN SOURCE

    Joomla
    Content Management System (CMS)- http://www.joomla.org/
    Mambo CMS- http://www.mamboserver.com/
Mambo Dreamweaver Extentions- MSAS Server for Testing, Templates and lots of mambo goodies - http://mamboforge.net/frs/?group_id=106
Also, Mambo PHP-shop is available, to run an online store. -Should be included if you download Mambo- Mambo/Joomla is amazing. There's nothing it can't do.
Mambo setup on a server requires an advanced knowledge of setting up the mysql databases and use of php 4.0. (Not 5.0)- any ISP can set up your website with it, you just need to learn how to use the admin.

For an example of what Mambo can look like, go to one of my in progress sites: http://www.a-writers-place.com (this is under construction)

Free FTP Software (File Transfer Protocol) (Upload your code or pictures to your website)

    Filezilla FTP- Free http://www.download.com/FileZilla/30...ml?tag=lst-0-1

    Shopping Carts- OPEN SOURCE
Zen Cart OS Commerce- AWESOME shopping cart- Advanced User recommended. http://www.zen-cart.com

    Photo Editor-
Similar tool to Adobe Photoshop but free. OPEN SOURCE
The Gimp- Download both files, install the libraries first, then the software. http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

Flash Development: Shareware, Not exactly Free
    Coffee Cup Flash Firestarter

This is the program I learned how to do flash with, very easy to learn, until I switched to Flash MX. I recommend this for beginners. It is free to use, but will put a little print saying "Created by coffee-cup software) on it unless you have the purchased version. But still....
    http://www.coffeecup.com/firestarter/

Graphics: All FREE Stock Photography- Amazing graphics to work with- tons have no usage restrictions, the rest you just ask permission for. No charges. http://www.sxc.hu/

If you're looking for anything, just respond to this post, and I'll see what I can find for you.

        Hi Jeepgirl

I'm trying to find a good program to enlarge my digital pictures (make posters). Have you ever used one that you really liked.

        Thanks

          Re: Jeepgirls List of Goodies!

The issue with enlarging a picture beyond it's original size is that it will become distorted. You can always shrink, but making it bigger is a no-no. You'll lose your resolution, the pixels will become distorted and all the small details that are invisible in a regular photo that make up the details will show up...
Take your pictures on the highest resolution that your camera will allow and work with the larger photo. The only problem with that of course is that you wont'get nearly as many pictures on the camera...
I do have one question, how are you printing posters? www.cafepress.com can make your posters out of images you create and you can purchase it at the cost of making it if you use their free-create and buy.
I've done that for some of my pictures, certain ones even have frames. I open the pictures in Adobe Photoshop ( use gimp if you don't have photoshop) , touch them up, and upload them to cafe-press.
