Pop-up invasion. Help pls!

For the last few days I've had pop-ups occurring every few minutes. The pop-ups are from something called CiD and they advertise lots of different products: casinos, travel agencies, even eBay.

I can't get rid of them with my spyware program (Adaware) or with my antivirus. They are very irritating.

Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks.

1. Check your internet settings to make sure your pop-up bocker is turned on. (I assume you have a fairly current version of IE or Mozilla Firefox).


2. Adaware stinks compared to Spybot Search and destroy, which is also free - try it, be sure to "immunize & silently block all bad pages.

Yes... my pop-up blocker is on, but I'll try to download Spybot later today and see what happens.

It sounds a lot like there is a process running on your own system that's causing the pop-ups. Do you have Windows XP? You can check the process list and see if there is anything suspicious running.

Ummmm Higgies,thanks...but (I'm whispering in your ear): "What's a process?" (sorry, I'm soooo computer challenged!!!). Thing is... half of the windows stuff on my computer is in Italian, and it gets very confusing trying to follow people's instructions, because half the time, I'm not sure if I'm clicking what they mean me to click.
Anyway... tried a couple of other spyware programs... no dice. But then tried the one Susan suggested and... I'm holding my breath, but so far it's been twenty minutes with no pop-ups!!! Fingers crossed....

I'd have to walk you through it and it's unlikely you'd be able to find the one that might be trouble, but if you want...

Can you take screenshots? If so, do this.

Right-click on the taskbar at the bottom, select task manager.
When the program opens, click on the processes tab.
Use Alt-Print screen to get a shot of the process list.
Paste that into wordpad or Word.
Repeat until you capture all in the list (i.e. scroll down the list and take a shot).
Then you can save and email me the wordpad doc.
My email should be listed in my user profile.

Think you could do that?

Awww Higgies... thanks so much, it's really kind of you. I managed to get the list... but can't seem to take a screenshot. Not sure if my computer does that.... Tried to copy and paste, but that doesn't work. Is there any other way of getting it into word?

Hold {alt}+{printscreen} for the window on top; or {shift}+{printscreen} for all thats visible on screen, then paste into Word doc.


Also, Have you checked your internet options setting for security in the zone "internet" - you may want to raise the bar.

Thanks for your suggetions Susan... yes, I did try raising the bar in "internet", but when I did that the pop-ups still popped up and I couldn't post anything on the board!!

Re the "printscreen"... I don't seem to have a key with that on, either in Italian or English.

Really?? It should be on the top right....hmmm...near scroll lock usually. Well, that stinks.

Try looking in your add/remove programs and seeing if there are any programs in there that seem suspicious. Usually they'd be things like search tools, toolbars, "ad something"....

Just did that Higgies (well half an hour ago or so)... saw something suspicious and with my fingers crossed I removed it. So far so good.... it's been half an hour now and no pop-ups!

"CiD Help" of all things! On each of the pop-ups, in the top left hand corner was "CiD" in very small letters. Boy, am I glad to get rid of all those casinos and things! Thanks again!
