Question about graphics cards ~ From Peter

Hi Everyone, :wave

My PC is pretty new about six months, I originally specked it out with an ATI 128 X300 SE graphics card - the graphics are fine, I'm not a gamer but I do a whole lot of digital photography and writing and the type on my screen has a bit of blur to it.

Sooooo I was thinking of upgrading to a 256 but it's a whopping 250 bucks!

The salesman at comp usa and Dell say I'll see a huge difference, Friends have told me I'll see no difference at all unless I was into games or doing high end graphics...Any thoughts?

Graphics memory has little to do with resolution.

If you are really into photography upgrade your monitor.

I upgraded to a digital flat panel...so maybe it's time for those Bi-focals ..I'm getting rickety!

Peter, perhaps it the refresh rate setting on your monitor that is too low. You know, when you see a monitor on television the line that keeps wrapping around the screen?? Sometimes that can blur the image if it is too slow for our eyes - meaning our eyes have to work overtime to correct the image.

Also, try different resolutions. ??

I think Perry is right about the monitor. Some of those digital flat panels are made with a larger pixel size so they are more affordable, and one affect you'll see is the fonts will not be as crisp as they could be. Look at the specs and see what the dot pitch is for your monitor. Let us know what that is, along with the size.

The only difference between a 128 and 256 card of the same type is amount of textures your card can load into memory. The only time that becomes important is gaming and CAD work, and for CAD work, you typically buy a professional card that has less tolerance for error.
