  • Re: System processes - why am I running so high?

    Hi Folks, :geek

    A question about system Processes:

At any given time my computer is running 55-60 processes, I think I have way to many programs that run in the background and slow down performance. The irony is a lot of them are accelerator and performance based software programs in addition to my anti virus, fire wall and so forth.

Any thoughts on how to reduce the processes that kick on at start up..I go through my start up menu and if I don't know what it is I leave it checked, no programs other than those mentioned above are checked for start up.

    Is 55 to much?

Depends on the memory of the system, and the applications running in there.

Run MSConfig.exe. Write down the questionable startup processes listed, and take the name back to one of these site:

    Windows processes,driver,win taskman,Windows Task Manager,windows process viewer,EXE file,DLL file,windows services,Autostart windows

They will help determine what the impact of running it or not running the application. They probably are not spyware with your other protection running, but helpful apps can "help" slow down your system as well.

      Thanks Kent!

I down loaded a trial version of task manager from the links you gave me , it seems like a really cool little program. Checks each proccess and rates it's level of risk/danger..plus you get a huge window so it's easy to read...great program!
