  • CPU Fan?

Having some trouble with one of my CPU fans. Sometimes it starts making noises and sometimes it just stops blowing. After a very gentle tap, it usually comes back on. The computer is usually on 24-7 but if you turn it off for a couple of hours, then it rattles pretty loudly but eventually, stops that racket and starts blowing again. My son has taken the cover off and using compressed air, has cleaned the inside of dust. Can someone help? I'm pretty sure a new fan is needed but I have absolutely no idea on how to buy a new one. Don't want to get the wrong one. It's located at the very top of the tower. Is that the power supply fan?

    Thanks for your input!

The power supply fan is inside the box that all the wires come from.
Some computers have what is called a case fan right below the power supply.

If the fan you're talking about is on the motherboard, which is on one of the long sides of the case (usually the right side as you face the computer) and has all the little parts on it and all the flat cables go from it to the the hard rive, CD drive, etc, then it is the CPU fan. If you don't know how to change it, and nobody you know is a geek, it might be easier to let someone at the store do it. Best Buy has people who will do it, and if you look in the Yellow Pages under computers, you should be able to find a small store. If you bring in your computer (only the box, not the monitor or anything else) they can fix you up with the right fan and put it on. They might charge to put it on, but it's possible to break the mothrboard and/or the CPU if it's not done right. If it's stopping and getting noisy, it likely needs to be replaced.

Thanks sskyeye. As soon as I get home I'll take a look and see which one it is. I have someone to put a new one in, but I need to know what to order, so I'll take a look. I appreciate the help.

Make sure you DO replace the fan ASAP, especially if it actually stops. My fan stopped working and, I don't know what in the world was wrong with me, but I just kind of ignored it. I ended up cooking the motherboard, which was much more expensive to replace than just a fan. *sigh*
