I had one for 3 years in the late 90's. Solid machines. However, that was before their change of focus from PC's to software and consulting.

We have used IBM's for our workstations for the last five years. Some models are good, some are not so good. I would check out the model at the store first.

My general impression on there equipment (with the majority of my experience is on the server side) is that there high end stuff is great (perhaps best on the market). Playing in the commodity market of the low end machines, they don't do as well as some of the other brands IMO. IBM mfg has a lot of overhead, so it turns out to be more overpriced or underpowered at the same price point.

I have a work thinkpad i've had for 3 yrs and it's been beaten up pretty well and has handled the abuse far better than my personal Dell laptop does. I think they make a fairly decent notebook..

At work, we use IBM laptops and they get refreshed every 2 years because they start playing up, crashing and doing all sorts of weird things. Plus, laptops are not easy to upgrade ie you can't replace just one part, you have to replace to whole thing.

Also, I used to have an IBM computer at home, and it often crashed, was slow and even though it was a new computer at the time, I was not happy with the product.

If I were you, I would either buy another brand or build your own ie do some research, take a PC-know-all friend with you and buy the parts yourself... I ought to know, because I work at IBM ... yes, I know it's sacrilegious to not promote the product of the company you work for - but I have seen better-brand computers and laptops!

PS. I have seen the Toshiba laptops work better. Wouldn't really recommend Dell - you pay more for the brand than the computer
