  • New DVD Player needed

    Heya,

So my trusty DVD player bit the big one a couple weeks ago, and unfortunately, it looks like it is going to cost more to repair it than it would to just replace.
The unit was a Yamaha DVD-C920, 5-disc changer, Faroujda DCDi Progressive scan, DVD-A, burr-brown DACs, the whole nine yards.

I've been doing a little research over what is availible these days, and so far some that have caught my interest are -

Kenwood Sovereign DVM-5700 Refurb from Cructhfield

    Yamaha DVD-S1500

    Yamaha DVD-S2500

    Yamaha DVD-C950 (coming out soon)

    Denon DVD-2910

    Panasonic DVD-S97

    Pioneer DV-588A

    Sony DVPN-S775V

    Sony DVPN-S975V

I am looking for something that does DVD-A or SACD (or both), has progressive scan (and the Faroujda chip is a big plus), multidisk capability is nice, and good build quality is also nice. I'd like to keep it below $500 if possible.

Does anyone have experience with any of those models? Any others I might want to check out?

Sorry, but no I dont. I just use my Playstation 2 to play DVD's on.

But I will bump this one up again for you, just in case anyone missed it the first time.

ditto on the palystation rich, but the proffessional there at blockbuster did warn me that I would wear out my PS2 playing movies in it.... :yikes Maybe he doesn't know so much?

No, I have heard that about PS2s as DVD players as well. Also, the output quality of a PS2 as a DVD player leaves a lot to be desired.

I ended up finding a Panasonic DVD-S97 at Tweeter on a clearance price. It is a great unit, updated version of the chipset from my old Yamaha, so great picture quality, very good sound, built very solid, and it does 1080i upconversion, so it outputs an HD signal instead of just a progressive scan one.

Retailed at $300 but since the model is about to be replaced I picked it up for only $200.
