  • my computer is slower than normal

most of you that know me also know i have dial up. every time it gets slow i try to figure out what jack downloaded and end up asking him to uninstall whatever. that usually gets me back to a normal pace.

about a week ago jack installed a mcAfee virus scan. about a week ago the computer started slowing down. also last week i got onto a couple links that were in chat and since then i have been getting a lot of spam messages. i do not open any of them, just delete right after i right click and block sender.

do you think the virus scan is slowing me down? i am figuring just uninstall and jack can always do it over. right?

i have defraged and dumped cookies and deleted files. i don't keep many emails. my inbox, outbox sent and save boxes stay fairly well cleaned out.

be very gentle i am computer challenged. speak slowly and use small words. lol

ask Jack what settings he set you on, is it constanly scanning and looking to update itself? Is it running in the background? how much of your memory (the computers not jimmie jo's)is it using?

oh and since you are on dial up check and see if there are any new connection numbers in your area cause as more folk use the same number you do on the same phone company trunk in line the slower you go same for cable hook ups.

I'm assuming that when you say it is slowing down it is 'overall' not just the web browsing. Just turn mcAfee off temporarily instead of removing it. Check your startup folder and if it is in there take it out. Also, check your task manager to see what else is running on your PC that might slow it down. If you need details send me a PM. I'd be glad to step you through some diagnostics over the weekend.

thanks guys. i have to be out of pocket for part of tomorrow and practically all day sunday. if jack can get a look see at what you both have said then do it we will see if it helps any. he just told me a few minutes ago that he dumped some stuff off of the computer last night. and i sent the aol im to my recycle bin. mog says that she is pretty sure that is what disabled here computer at home.

another question would be if the batttery on my wireless mouse is low what kind of problems will i be having? could this be part of the problem?

if you had AOL and another system sometijmes AOL runs in conflict with other browsers so you may need to not only trash the AIL IM but uninstall it and any other AOL programs that came with it if you don't use AOL dial up

Yep, my workplace runs McAfee as part of it's policy and although I've scheduled it to run once a week, it slows down my computer INCREDIBLY even though I don't see any visible signs of it doing so, but I know it is because the company tech supp showed me that it was running in the background.

Don't uninstall your virus-scanner because it does stop incoming viruses. Just try and schedule an automatic scan during a time you are not using it but can still leave your computer on.
You can disable the scanner at times, but NOT when you are using the Internet - you are sooo prone to computer attacks - I should know - we have our own firewall, web server, mail server - basically home network

also, when batteries run low in a wireless mouse, you mouse looks like it's working slower or it feels like you are still using the old mouse with a ball in it and it's gone "sticky"

Finally, as mentioned in prev post, ask jack what he is installing. Sometimes installing certain items, esp if he downloads from the internet, can put extra files, or spyware that affects the speed of your computer. Most are not aware of the spyware unless you know how to look for it.
If jack plays games, be aware also that games places a lot of DLL ("drivers"-computer terminology) onto your PC and over time these do slow your PC down as these tend to be located in main systems folders and the folder gets too big.

            Cheers
