  • Computer troubles!!

    HOpe you can help me!
I have had a rough few days worrying about this computer.
Going to be a long story. WARNING!

I visited a neighboring towns web site(guymonok.org) and all the sudden a bunch of spam started popping up, then I got a message telling me that the installation was complete. I thought what installation??????? then I had a popup ask me if I wanted to scan my computer to remove the PORN off of my PC. I thought WHAT porn!!! I didn't run it, but I couldn't get this request off the computer without pushing the button to turn the computer off.

First off I don't have a firewall, I run Windows ME OS. My question is if I had had a firewall would that have stopped this from happening?

Next thing I did was go to the control panel and look to see what was installed on my computer. There was so much that wasn't there before. So I started uninstalling them one by one. Shortly after that the computer was in big trouble. blue screen, nothing else.

There was a message telling me to use the cd-rom that came with the computer to reinstall, HP, 2001 is when I got this puter. So I read on the back of the case the cd-roms were in. I chose to: woops!! let me back up.

I tried to set the system restore back to a latter date before all the problems and the blue screen happened. The System Restore couldn't open up, said errors.(I wondered if the junk caused this)

OK. So I put the cd-roms in and chose to do a system restore instead of reformate. I didn't really know what I was doing, but it did make the computer come back up. Now most everything needs to be reinstalled. Yesterday I reinstalled the printer, the scanner, and downloaded Adobe reader and they all work now.

I had bought Work Suites 2004 a few months back and after the system restore, of course it didn't work. So I tried to reinstall, but MS Word 2002 will not work and this what I bought the dang software for. Wouldn't you know. I haven't tried to reinstall yet, just incase I did something wrong the first time I tried.

I also ran Adaware6 and Spybots and both found some spam and removed them. so I thought I was good to get the spyware, malware removed.

Oh and Norton antivirus 2004 wouldn't install, errors!!! With the cd that came with my Norton AV 2004, It would scan for viruses(it found Bloodhound W32.EP), but when it came to installing, half way thru it shot up an error and wouldn't install. I thought now what am I going to do.
So I went to the net and downloaded, Avast4antivirus, home version(free). It installed without a problem. After I got it all ready and scanned for viruses, it found lots of adware, and trojan horses.

What can I do different to keep trojan horses out of my computer? Is there something I need to do like change passwords on the computer, because of the trojan horses? I have never delt with this before.

After running AVAST4.6, it removed most of the problems, except for what was in Restore. So I turned off System restore and got rid of the junk in there.

The junk that AVAST found was like Win32.Trojano(TRJ) and Win32.Adan(ADW) I found these listed in VPS history. What is VPS!

the scans by Avast report no infection as of yesterday. so I have turned System restore back on yestereday.

Is there something else I need to do.? That you can think of? All advice appreciated.

I do think I will buy a new computer in the next few months and I want to learn what to do to not have this happen to the next computer.

There is really more to report, but I will wait til I hear from some of you . I need answers. I'd like to plant my foot up the persons a$$ that put this crap out there to hurt our computers.

So much for the rant!!! Any advice is appreciated and recommendations.

Becky Sue, welcome to our world. No one with a PC is immune from this stuff. No one. Makes me glad I have Mac's at home. Sorry that it happened to you but there is always a silver lining to this stuff... people get to learn more about their PC's and how to protect themselves in the future.

First off, a firewall may have helped in this situation. A virus protection program definitely would have.

From your description it appears something got a strong hold of your PC. The only *sure* way to get rid of it is to reformat your hard drive - ie. start over and reinstall the OS and all your software. These viruses and spyware programs update the Registry in so many areas that it nearly impossible to remove every foot print.

What can you do in the future? Keep your virus program up to date and run adware/spybot programs frequently.

I'll let the others chime in on the best ways to protect your PC.

I'm not going to pretend I know a whole heck of a lot about computers but my husband sure does. The family calls him Obi-Juan. Anyway, something similar happened to my sister and he directed her here... http://forum.iamnotageek.com/t-1819059447.html she found what she needed and got her computer all straightened out. It's a great site. Although, ironically, it does have pop ups. :sarcasm I hope this helps!

        Thanks for the advise.

I was running Norton antivirus 2004 at the time of the attack, it updated itself automatically, so the virus definations were up to date. I did have adawareSE and spybots installed and I ran them each a couple times a week. I thought I was doing what I needed to be safe. the only thing I didn't do was get a firewall. wish I had.

I don't understand what a trojan horse is and how I got it. do you get them by opening attachments that are infected? Do they gallop thru ports(whatever ports are)? Even though the antivirus program I have now says it can not find any infection, are these trojan horses still in my computer? The infected files are in quirentine(can't spell). so I understand they are not a threat in there. Is this right, as long as I don't let them out.

I understand that if you do about anything online you are going to get spyware and other undesirable things, but it all seemed to attack when I visited my old hometowns web site. So much for going back home online!! LOL

Thanks Bugaboo the the link I will check it out and try to learn more to be safer.

I really appreciate everyone and all the help.

Reminds me of Ghost Busters. "I strongly suggest not shutting down the containment power grid!".

Seriously, the virus protection programs are only as good as those programming them and they don't detect or fix every problem.

          Lesson learned. :hug

            Thanks Perry,
Do you mind recommending a antivirus program. I was using Norton and now my computer is in questionable shape.

You are so right, Ghost busters is a good comparison. Like when the electricity was turned off and all the ghosts were released. :yikes

My corporate security folks are top notch and do a great job at investigating products. They selected Symantec (Norton) as our corporate anti-virus solution. You've got the best.

My impression is that you got some nasty spyware from that web site (or some other) and Norton won't catch those.

Use adaware and spybot for spyware.
