    Stalled!

Thank you soooooo much for your post. I did a clean induction for 3 weeks and lost 17 pounds! On the 4th and 5th weeks-nothing! I now realize that my previous loss is awesome and I should be PATIENT-been overweight for most of my life and the quick weight loss rather threw me.
I will only weigh once a week... I will only weigh once a week...

I am so glad I read your information - thank you so much! I am just finishing 1 month of Induction and really don't think I've lost over the last 2 weeks - tomorrow will tell! But no matter what - this gave me hope to not give up and keep on keepin' on! Thanks!

Re: PISS-Post Induction Stall Syndrome- a reality to be expected

        Hey Carol,
I know exactly how you feel... I've been in the same boat. Looks like I started about 4 days before you, and for the past two weeks the scale has gone upwards for me. Partially because of P.I.S.S., and partly because of coming off a daily water pill for BP. It's so easy to become discouraged watching that scale creep back up after all of the hard work being put into it.

But, I'm hoping that I'm coming out of it today!! This morning I've got that "I can't drink enough water to fill me up" feeling", and I also can't stay away from boys room! This is the first time I've had that feeling since coming off meds.

I guess stalls are inevitable, but we have to stay the course.

Calling it GOAL at this point. I'm happy with where I am now and hope to stay there, or maybe even take it down a little more.

just remember stalls as defined by Dr Atkins are 4 weeks with no sclae nor inches lost not the slight hesitation in scale weight loss experieneced after the initial weight loss. P I S S sounded better then post induction hesitation syndron so the slight hesitation became a stall in the tital but not in reality.

              (1) When you start Atkins induction, your body dumps a lot of water
along with the stored glycogen, and there are other hormonal things going on
that promote water loss. So you lose several pounds of water, sometimes
more. You may even get slightly dehydrated at first. (2) As you continue on
induction, your body begins to adapt to the reduced carb intake. Water
retention is gradually normalized, so that you are no longer dehydrated. A
pound to several pounds of water weight may gradually return. (3) As the
small amount of water weight gradually returns, you're also gradually
burning fat. The water weight increase is offset by the fat loss, showing a
net slowdown or even "stall" on the scale, sometimes even a small increase
on the scale. (4) As you continue low-carbing, the gradual loss of weight in
the form of body fat will finally start showing up, and you'll start seeing
the scale moving down again. This whole process may encompass a period of a
month or more. Seeing the scale stop changing, or even a small increase in
weight is therefore pretty normal for many Atkins dieters, and is not a
reason to drastically change the diet or start doing a radically hypocaloric
thing. It is always a good idea, at any stage, to be careful about your carb
intake, to make sure you're correctly charting your carb intake.

If, after four weeks past induction, you are not seeing the scale start to
move, then you probably want to look at ways to get past the stall. A true
stall is not diagnosed, by the way, unless you've gone 6 weeks without loss
on the scale or in inches. Methods such as counting calories, stepping up
exercise, increasing or decreasing carb intake, cutting out certain types of
foods can be tried, preferably not all at one time (so you know what is
working and what isn't). Also be aware that on low-carb diets, many people
(not just women) seem to lose weight intermittently, rather than gradually.
They will go along sometimes for several weeks with nothing showing up on
the scale, and then all of a sudden, in one day or over a couple days, lose
several pounds. Nobody seems to know why, but this seems particularly common
to low-carb dieting. Patience is a good trait for low-carb dieters to work
              on.

I hope this helps everyone!!!! I know MANY of us are in this situation like me right now!! Lets hang on and prove this theory PISS to be right on the nose! GOOD LUCK ALL MY FORUM FRIENDS!

Re: PISS-Post Induction Stall Syndrome- a reality to be expected

I haven't been on the diet long enough to have weeks and weeks of stalls. However, I have noticed that on this diet, the weight loss is non-linear. I will go a few days at the same weight and then OVERNIGHT will lose 1-2 pounds. And this is going by my weight every morning before eating anything. At times it can be discouraging but then again....it's kinda nice waking up and discovering you've lost weight!

Re: PISS-Post Induction Stall Syndrome- a reality to be expected

This thread needs a bump. Great info here, really helped me today. Started Atkins almost a month ago and lost a quick 12.2 lbs in the first three weeks, but since that point my weight has slowly crept back up. Was planning on doing extended induction since I still have over 100 lbs to lose and my resistance level was moderate, so I knew it couldn't be a new food I added. I figured maybe I was just retaining water due to too much sodium in my diet. Sad thing is I pretty much knew everything in this post, sometimes you just need to see it.

i dont think i'll be trying a jump start. i have decided not to weigh myself for 2 more weeks, its hard, especially after a gym session. but i am so elated with my weight loss the first two week and i don't want to be disheartened

anyway, regardless of what the scales say, i know i'm losing inches and other people have noticed too.

                          good luck
