    Water essential for tackling obesity

    14/03/07

Water UK welcomes an initiative by the Obesity Awareness and Solutions Trust (TOAST) for National Obesity Awareness Week (11 – 17 March). It informs consumers of the health benefits of zero calorie tap water, and its role in weight management and well being.

Water is integral to the healthy functioning of the body and is present in all the important chemical reactions – such as the production of energy. In its guidance on water within weight management, TOAST advises:

“Incredible as it may seem, water is quite possibly the single most important catalyst in losing weight and keeping it off. Most of us take water for granted but it may be the only true 'magic potion' for permanent weight loss”.

Obesity Week has been organised to create awareness and understanding for the 20 million people across the UK that are now battling with obesity. Over 65% of the adult population are now overweight or obese* and according to statistics compiled by TOAST, cost the UK £3.3-£3.7 billion per annum for obesity and £7.4 billion per annum if figures are combined for obesity and those who are overweight.

According to TOAST, by 2025 a quarter of the NHS budget will be used to treat type 2 diabetes and employees will be taking a total of 18 million sick days a year off work.

Pamela Taylor, Water UK Chief Executive said:

“Good hydration plays an important part play in weight management. Tap water contains no fats, no proteins, no carbohydrates and therefore no calories. It is the perfect complement for a nutritionally balanced meal, and for maintaining a healthy life. Water UK is delighted to support TOAST in its efforts to protect people whose lives are affected by obesity”.

Water UK’s top hydration tips are:

    1. Start by drinking a glass of fresh tap water when you get up in the morning.
    2. If you are not used to drinking water regularly, try initially replacing just one of your less healthy drinks a day with fresh water, increasing your consumption as the weeks go by.
    3. Carry a bottle filled with chilled tap water whenever you leave the house.
    4. Ask for a jug of iced tap water with your meal when in restaurants and with your alcohol when in bars – good establishments will be happy to provide this.
    5. Many people mistake thirst for hunger, so stay hydrated. In a sedentary day, try to drink around 2 litres of water.
