Lowering to three letters brings too many inconsequential words into play and would cause the search index to grow exponentially. Then, we would need to rebuild the search index which could take 24 hours. Oh, and the memory required to handle the longer searches would be huge. Sorry. This isn't something we want to decrease right now.
*Edit* Perhaps when we stabilize the server and increase the memory it can be looked at.
