  • I'll miss all my friends here!

Well, going off and on Atkins for awhile. I seemed to have just started then my husband and I got a surprise. We are pregnant. Im very happy, my hcg levels are high and they think i may be carrying twins... Im a proud mom of two boys already. We have been trying for our third for over a year now. I was told maybe i couldent concieve because of my high weight. Well now im expecting my third (or more it twins) Im hoping for a healthy pregnancy. after he/she is born i will start atkins right away, so i can be healthy for me, my family and kids. I wish you all the best of luck, be back soon!

        Congratulations!

There's no need to go off Atkins. You could do the Maintenance phase.

Congratulations! You know (and as G beat me by two minutes to post above!), you can follow Atkins Maintenance during your pregnancy. In any case, try not to use it as an excuse to eat Oreos and chili cheese fries everyday like I did! Make your return as easy as possible for yourself, because it's certainly a challenge to focus on weight loss when there's a new little one to suck up all your free time!

Out of curiosity - how do you do maintenance if you haven't gone through all of the rungs and know your CCL & all that?

Re: I'll miss all my friends here!

When I was pregnant with my second daughter, I was diagnosed with gestation diabetes in my 28th week. I spent the rest of my pregnancy eating in a way that was essentially Maintenance with a high CCLM - about 100g net carb per day (about 130g total carb).

I'd start my day with a couple of eggs, bacon, cottage cheese, avocado and tomato slices, or a bowl of Fiber One with milk and fresh blackberries - and if I didn't have Fiber One for breakfast, I'd have 1/2c dry as a munchie snack in the afternoon. Lunch was usually a big veggie-loaded salad with a lean protein and a high-fiber flatbread. Dinner was a protein with a big side of steamed veggies and a small scoop of brown rice. Snacks were apples or some cut-up melon, cheese and nuts. Dessert (sanctioned by my RD) was usually a cup of reduced-carb hot cocoa (with whole milk, cocoa and a packet of Splenda) or a 100-calorie brownie with a small glass of milk.

Although a typical controlled-carb GD diet would look like 30g-15g-30g-15g-30g-15g for meals and snacks, my particular reaction to carbs in the morning made that unworkable - 45g total carb in the morning would spike my blood sugar like I had sucked down a 2-liter Coke and a dozen cookies. So my daily diet probably looked more like 15g-15g-20g-20g-40g-20g. It worked, in any case - I avoided insulin, my blood sugar behaved and Toddler came out perfect and of normal size so I didn't have to have a c-section.
