  • Hi Everyone!

    Dear friends,

after lurking around for a week, i decided to take the plunge. Today is the end of my second day of induction. The first day was very hard indeed. Particularly as I noticed that I had not shopped well enough. Well today, I got some tofu and gluten. I intend to do any frying only in olive oil. I have fish, chicken and eggs stocked for my non-veg days.

I found that I was unable to sleep well on my first night with low carbs. It was definitely more to do with biochemistry than psychology (though some might say they are almost the same thing when it comes to the brain!). I'm very worried about the withdrawal sympton/induction flu which will probably kick in, over the next one or two days. Because I'm currently writing my thesis and hopefully I'll be able to take it.

I am very addicted to sugar and can't drink anything that's not sweet. This has been the hardest part so far, but I'm happy to say that I haven't yet succumbed. My only worry so far is that I used a can of "Malaysian Curry" which indicated that it has about 6.5g of carbs and the list of ingredients had sugar in it. Does this sugar count? Or as long as the net carbs is 20g its all good?

At this point, I just want to say that this forum has definitely helped me make the decision of starting Atkins diet. There is a fair bit of negative publicity associated with Atkins diet, but no objective proof that it is actually harmful for health as long as we eat sensibly and get our green carbs, and responsibly switch to the next three phases of Atkins. I am quite convinced that in my case, it is definitely the refined flour and sugar which has so far proved to be my undoing.

As I don't have a weighing scale at the moment, I don't know the precise starting weight, though I'm pretty sure its around 71kg which is what it was two weeks back. I don't intend to weigh until the next two to three weeks, but my goal is to loose around 15kgs. More importantly, I really want to loose the inches of fat. I'm starting at a waist of 40" and want to slim down to 30".

I'm very hopeful and will try hard to follow the rules. And I want to thank you all for the great job you all have done in convincing newbies like myself that Atkins does work despite all the prejudiced columns out there.

Thanks and wish me luck, I know I'll need your help!

    Re: Hi Everyone!

Hi there! Glad to see you out of lurkdom! Since you don't have a whole heck of a lot to lose (I know it seems that way to you though) your loss will probably be a tad slower than some people who have a lot to lose so be patient and keep that great positive attitude you've got going! Sounds like you prepared well and I forsee you becoming another Atkins success story!

You might want to look into a journal, that can really help to keep track of things in your life as well as what's going on in your head. The journal people are a great bunch!

There are also exercise challenges which is a great way to keep people motivated to get their exercise in.

We're all here rooting for you and anytime you have a question or just want to rant/share we'll listen. Sometimes things get lost in the mix, especially on a busy day, or can be overlooked so anytime you feel like you're not getting something answered just bump it up...eventually someone will see it. We may miss things sometimes but we always care!

As for the curry...I'm afraid I don't know...but I'm sure someone will be able to answer it for you! Welcome to

      Re: Hi Everyone!

Hi and welcome. Yup, sugar counts. It's not on the acceptable food list for induction! The foods eaten in induction are important, not just the 20g of carbs. Give all the stickies in the induction forum a read as well as your book and you'll be well on your way to meeting your goals.

Hi Tofuboy!! So happy that you've decided to join us on our quest to be healthy and lose weight. Its been 1 1/2 years for me (March 2004) since I made the same decision that you are facing now. I was hoping that Atkins would work and listening to both the negative and the people on this site that had success and were singing the praises of Atkins.

Atkins was the best thing I ever did!! I feel 1,000 times better than I've ever felt. I have lost weight, lowered my blood pressure, lowered my cholesterol, got lots of energy, self confidence and met so many wonderful people here in the ADBB.

Best wishes to you!! You can do it. I'd recommend you get the book ~ Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution ~ and read it so you can understand how the program works and why. It has a list of induction foods so you know exactly what you should and should not eat.

          Hi Everyone!

Thank you all so much for your advice and encouragement. Now I'll try to avoid things which list sugar as one of the ingredients as well as the other non-permissibles.

          Things to look into:
          -get DANDR
          -look into exercise forum
          -look into journal forum

One more thing I'd like to share. I noticed I had trouble sleeping once again last night and got up much earlier than I'm used to. I feel better though once I'm up than before: less of a heavy head now (i used to get them even though i'm a teetotaler, probably sugar hangover!) But I am quite concerned about the lack of sleep catching up with me by mid-week. Because normally I don't take naps and tire myself out and sleep soundly at nights.

One last thing, you all look great I wish you all the best of success in attaining your goals! Thank you all! Yay

            Dear Friends,

I think its started! The ketosis has started!! There is a distinct change in breath since the past few hours. Something I can't exactly describe but its sort of sweet, not really bad breath but fairly consistent. Its the first time in my life I've had this experience. I hope it isn't just the dinner I had, (quite unlikely as it was chicken with veggies). I have been having a pretty tough time with upset tummy though.

I also do feel a little different energy wise. A little less sleepy. The best part of it all, I think I survived the induction flu, unless its yet to creep up on me. And I also bought a copy of DANDR and skimmed over some of the sections.

For now, going back to thesis...!

              Tofuboy:

Understand about the upset tummy. When I first did Atkins I had the same problem. My UPS guy had lost a lot of weight and when I asked him what he was doing he said Atkins.
So, I decided to give it a try. I had the upset stomach problem and asked him about it too. He said, "If you can make it past week three, the stomach will calm down." He was right. After week three it stopped. This time when I started I have not had that problem. Are you eating any of the sugar alcohol products, if so this could be the reason. I cannot eat anything with Maltitol in it. Read the labels and be patient and I think you'll do OK.

                Hi Friends,

Thanks very much for your suggestion. TNDeb, its comforting to know that after some time my stomach will be a bit more stable if I stick with the induction rules even more strictly than i currently am. I also need to do more exercise than what I currently am doing. Yesterday I ran for about 20 mins (the first time in a long long time My first week has not been a very successful one. So I am determined to put in renewed efforts. Unfortunately, I have to be vegetarian until Oct. 12th. which is going to make things pretty hard. I have alot of good green veggies stocked up. Including cauliflower and broccoli. But I got a reply over in the indcution forum that Tofu is not allowed during induction. I hope that gluten is allowed. I have mushroooms as well.

I have also started eating a bit of cheese and use butter sometimes instead of the olive oil just to add variety.

Oh well, i hope i can do it.

                    Re: Hi Everyone!

                    Dear friends,

I'm back with an update. Life was tough over the past year, not because of Atkins but because of everything else that was going on. I did manage a nice two and a half months of proper Atkins diet from May to July with some exercise.

Since then I had to travel around alot and have been trying to get back on Atkins since. I've been eating "pseudo-Atkins" (eating Atkins friendly meals along with forbidden carbs!) which I know is not good because I've been sneaking in too much sugar. The reason why my weight hasn't ballooned back up is probably because of all the exercises and sports I've been doing for the past two months.

Well, I'm at a stage in life where things have settled down and I have ample opportunity for sports and exercise. I'm determined to resume proper Atkins diet from induction to aid me in my quest for fitness.

                    My quest in numbers:

Before Atkins: 71kgs 40" (Hypertension and high blood pressure)
July '06: 63kgs 36" + a drastic reduction in blood pressure closer to the lower end of the normal range
                    July-Oct: <<"pseudo-Aktins"... bad>>
                    Oct '06: 64.5kgs 37.25"

                    ***Goal: 59kgs 32" by Dec '06***

Summary of observations which have worked for me:
-Beginning induction: reduce carbs on day 0, eat tuna and mushrooms on days 1 and 2 and do alot of cardio (1.5 to 2 hrs) for quick transition into ketosis. (DRINK ALOT OF WATER!)
-The slightest indulgence in bad carbs kicks you right out of atkins.
-Eat home made food (from fresh and raw ingredients) as you have the greatest control over the carbs
-No added salt in any prepared meals (for controlling tension and blood pressure)
-The induction phase does get easier if you do it properly, however, cheating even once leads to a downwards spiral
-I have yet to figure out what to do at important meetings with bosses and supervisors or other occasions where eating Atkins is very difficult.

Well dear friends, I wish you all nothing but the very best in your respective quests for fitness. Good luck!

                        Hi Sillygirl

Congrats on having recently surpassed your goal! Way to go!

Today I had a full day of meetings and lunch was served even though I had brought my own lunch from home (but didn't have the lunch box with me at the time of lunch).

I'm glad because I resisted the temptation of eating the bread sandwiches. I had the watery soup and cheese and a salad leaf. Tonight, I'll be going to bootcamp for an hour followed by about 2.5 hours of table-tennis training.

I hope that by Wednesday I would have kicked into ketosis. Nothing can stop me now, mwuahahaha

Your name caught my attention because I eat tofu (not recently, though) since I'm a vegetarian.

Wow, you are super determined. And you certainly are exercising alot. I bet you'll make your goal in no time!

Maybe you could post your stats in your signature or start a journal so we can all see how you're doing.

Good luck (not that you need any luck)!
