  • My name is Daniel and I have a few rookie questions

Hi my name is Daniel and I weigh about 280 pounds. And I have a few questions.

1.) I would like to bring it down to about 230- 240ish and was wondering if this is doable on the atkins diet?

2.)If i were to give myself a time table, on how long it were to take to lose 50, what would be a good estimate, if I stick to the diet?

3.)Also are there any fat burning dietary supplements i can take while doing atkins?

4.) and my final question how owuld I maintain 230 on the diet?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome to ADBB and to Atkins

okay the last one is easy you eat for a life time in the 4th and final phase of Atkins called maintenance.

There isn't any way fir anybody to give you a weight loss time table casue their will be dymanic varibles going on every day how many cals did you burn doing your life style how many doing your weight loss did you how much food did it take today to satisfy your hunger, what is your metabolic rate are you adding lean muscle mass at a fairly good clip while you morph off the body fat mass. All of those things can change your weight loss program daily. What we can tell you is it will depend on how hard your work your Atkins. If you start today you will be that much closer to your goal. You will be a smaller healthier person doingAtkins then if you don't do Atkins.

As to the fat burning supplements your body will use several compounds found in foods and in supplements to power the fat burning one is Acytel L caritinine sp? you can check out our vitanutriants and supplements sections to see. Some folk because of other weight loss programs and poor food choices will find they are deficient in many of the needed compounds while other will do fine with just a mulitvit. Ask your doc when you get your pre Atkins check up what you need. My docs recomendati9ns changed as I climbed the OWL carb ladder.

Re: My name is Daniel and I have a few rookie questions

Hi Daniel. 2big answered your questions... so I'll just say hello and welcome. Glad you found us.
LOL, a lot of folks think of Atkins as a three-legged stool. Exercise, Diet and Water, and actually I think that it has another leg and that is support. So, finding us, you have it all covered.
There are other things you can do to enhance the weight loss. Read the book and understand why fat is important in our diet and that its not fat that causes fat.
Follow induction to the letter for the first two weeks. If the food isn't on the list, don't eat it. If its limited, limit it and find foods that you really enjoy eating. That goes for Atkins shakes and bars and all low carb junk food.
Exercise, do both cardio and weights, you won't be sorry as you will tone while you lose.

Re: My name is Daniel and I have a few rookie questions

Welcome to ADBB! I am always glad with other males join us here and even the rations out.

1.) Certainly -- depending on your height. This diet can and does get many people to their goal weights. You certainly could be one of them. Remember, this is a long term way of eating, not just a crash diet.

2.) Everyone is different, so projecting a time table is extremely individualistic. I could say figure on 2 pounds a week, but your weight loss could be a lot faster or a lot slower than that. My weight loss averaged 3.5 to 4 #'s a week during the majority of the weight loss, but your results will vary. My recommendation: do the diet as prescribed with exercise for 2 to 4 weeks see how it works for you, you'll get a much better idea.

3.) For the typical person, no, your body will already be a fat burning machine. If you feel you must take something, L-Carnitine does help metabolize fat. You could try that.

4.) Move on through OWL to the Maintenance Phases of the Diet. There are a number of chapters in the book on how to do it successfully, and there is a number of successful people in our lifetime forum, who have been doing it for years as well.

Re: My name is Daniel and I have a few rookie questions

Welcome Daniel. I recommend you go the the induction forum and read all of the stickys there. Then do a clean induction to get started. You want to go into ketosis and get started burning stored fat. Be sure to pick up a copy of:

Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, 2002 edition affectionately referred to as the DANDR at the ADBB. Read it, live by it, follow it faithfully.

Any kind of exercise is great, but remember if you are new to exercise to start slowly and build up slowly. I'm very fond of an exercise tape by Leslie Sansone. It is called Walk Away The Pounds" and she has an entire series of tapes. They are a good choice because anyone can do them, they don't take any space, and they aren't strenuous, yet you get a great workout. The one I choose to do has you do 4 miles.

Hi Daniel. Everyone has already given you all the best advice on how to do Atkins and keep your goal weight once you reach it. I'd just like to give you my testimony that this Way of Life really Rocks!! I was 285 pounds -- so I had similar questions in my mind when I started Atkins. One thing that is going to amaze you is that once you start dropping inches, you are going to look like you weigh less than you do. My goal is 145. That used to be a number I was fixated on. Now, I don't care what the scales say. I care more about how great I feel and helping others. I am still doing the WAY OF EATING and exercising, taking my supplements and drinking lots of water, but it isn't something that I stress over anymore. I am happy and feel good.

I guess what I'm saying is don't let the number you want to weigh upset you. Enjoy the Way of Eating and the energy and the wonderful way you will feel. The weight will come off if you are doing Atkins by the plan. Best wishes!!!

Here's my thoughts on the exercise question. What do you like to do, and what is practical for you right now? If you live in the Midwest or climate like it, suggesting cardio outside is probably not likely in a few more weeks. If you have access to a gym that is another story. The best exercise is one you will do for at LEAST 30 minutes (or build to 30 minutes of length) and do at least 4 times a week. In an ideal world with gym access, I would recommend doing some cardio, which brought your heart up to the target heart rate, for 4 days a week, and add some strength training in as well on the off days. The combination of the two will see benefits. The more often you do both (strength with different parts and cardio especially) you'll see additional benefits.

any form of exercise you like in both the aerobic and the resistance types. check out some of the posts in the exercise forum if you don't have any favs. Many folk have posted about the exercise videos and/or types they do. the BFL prograom is a great workout as is HIIT but if you are a flabby out of shape couch potato just walking is great exercise.
