  • just starting.. im confused

    im just starting the atkins diet today
    so i can eat all of the meat, cheese and eggs i want during the first two weeks?

    Did you read your DR ATKINS NEW DIET REVOLUTION 2002 EDITION? cause if you read the whole book it tells you that although there are no limits placed on how much food you can eat of the fats and proteins by Dr Atkins that is because you are supposed to control yourself and only eat enough of them along with your 3 cupd of veggies from the chapter 11 acceptableveggies lists to satisfy your hunger at the time you are eating and then stop even if you got food on the plate carbs in your buget or room in your belly. Once you grasp the concept that Atkins is calorie control theough carb control you will be a big Atkins loser.

    As you progress in your Atkins you are going to discover the wonderful world of ketosis where your appetite is so suppressed you will need an alarm to remind you it is lunch time before dinner time arrives,

      Focus on getting the diet correct. Eat liberal portions of meat (chicken, beef, pork) eggs, but you are restricted on cheese intake (3 oz per day). While I may not agree with 2big that understanding that calorie control is beneath it all, changing your eating habits and sweet tooth is. What this diet allows you to do is regain absolute control over your eating again. You might overdo it the first two weeks with Calories (but you won't know because you will NOT be counting them, right?), but that is not the point. You are relearning how and what to eat.

          Eggs are listed as having 1g of carb, so you couldn't truly eat liberal amounts, could you?

            I have always used .6g, which of course you could round up, but even 1g, you'd still be able to eat 10 eggs and still have a majority of your carbs coming from veggies. The option of eating 10 eggs per day seems pretty liberal compared to MSM recommendation of only 1 or 2 per day. Just a reminder, eating something liberally doesn't mean eat as many as you can your hands on. I might be able to eat a 2-3 pound hamburger patty ala the new rage, but I still think the good doc would say I was missing some I am satisfied cue's my stomach was putting out.

              well Kent, that is calorie control even if you didn't realize you were learning it you did. Controlling the amount of food going in your body is calorie control.

              Read your book Dr Atkins telly you his plan isn't a lisence to gorge and to just eat to satisfy your hunger. He even tells newbues they will need to practice and sets up examples of how to do it by stopping at 1/2 your plate and getting up from the table.

                So I could probably get away with a 5 or 6 egg omelette once a day then? Sounds good to me. I would be happy with that by itself as breakfast!

                  Only if what you are limiting is less Calories than what you are replacing it with eating. I might not be eating whole pizzas anymore, but I am still eating 16oz steaks with full fat dressings. Calorie control argument only works if you are eating less Calories now than you were before you started the Diet. I wasn't. When I started the diet, I was eating the same if not more. It still takes a lot to satisfy me, but certainly one needs to only eat until they are satiated.

                    ah Kent re-read what I wrote and stop putting words in my post that aren't there.
                    I never never said you have to eat less cals on Atkins then you did before you started. I said Atkins is calorie control through carb control.

                    I know the science of Atkins and KNOW that it takes more energy to burn the proteins and fats from mouth to ATP then it does the carbs so we can consume more calories eating Atkins about 25% then we could eating high carb and not gain weight, BUT it is still eatting less calories then you expend in order to lose weight just as Dr Atkins says in DANDR chapter 11 q and A. And if you or anyone else eats more cals then you burn up from all caloric expendatures you will gain weight even on Atkins.

                    The amount of food it takes in the correct Atkins ratios to satisfy your hunger will vary from day to day just as your energy expendatures will vary from day to day.
