  • Yes, it works...

    Hi -

I stumbled across this board while searching for breakfast bars (long story). I wanted to briefly pass along my experiences with low-carb dieting.

I decided about three years ago, that I wanted to start road-racing motorcycles again. Even though my pants had gotten bigger over the years, in my head I was still twenty and weighed 130 pounds. It wasn't until my daughter took a picture of me leaning over a motorcycle gas tank that I realized how heavy I had really gotten:

That's when it really occured to me that years of business travelling and fast food had taken a toll...I had ballooned to 245 lbs. The size 44 pants now made sense.

I started doing some research, and I concluded that the science behind the Atkin system made sense. I started Atkins July of '03 and started going to the gym about a month later.

Today, things are different. I run 5-6 days a week, and weight train two days a week. I avoid excess sugar and simple carbs, but intake enough to maintain a body-fat percentage of 8.5-9.0%. My current weight is about 155 lbs.

The system works. Have faith that, if you intake less energy than you expend and reset your bodie's "sugar response" system, you will loose weight. Set reasonable goals and, most importantly, find a compelling "why", and the results will be virtually inevitable.

Best of luck to all -

    Mike

                Thanks for the comments, everyone...

The first ten pounds took about three weeks. I realized a couple of things immediately - you cannot negotiate or rationalize with sugar, and I wanted to "get it over with" as quickly as possible. I fined-tuned my intake and stepped-up the aerobic exercise, and went under 200 lbs after about the third month.

Things kinda tapered off a little from a weight standpoint as I began to swap muscle for fat, and I hit the 170 lbs mark about eight months in. The last 15 lbs were a gradual process over about the last year.

                - Mike

Did/do you use artificial sweeteners at all? I'm curious because I've been trying to kick them to the curb... unfortunately; I haven’t been able to kick them very far yet…

If you mean a sugar substitute for coffee, cereal, ect. then the answer would be "no". I never really threw a bunch of sugar on stuff. As a component of purchased foods - yes. I would look for Splenda in ice cream and similar items.
