  • Hi there! Ex-473lber here!

    Hi there,

My name is Dave and I live in Melbourne Australia.
I am 29 years old. I turn 30 on the 12th of January. In july this year I was 473 pounds or 215 kilos.

I have been on Atkins since the 25th July. Tommorrow (Xmas) it will be 5 months on Atkins.

I now weigh 393 pounds or 179 kilos. My edema has reversed and my sleep apnea is improved.

I've been 'fat' or overweight my whole life. It probably ahppenned around age 6. Because of severe Athsma (all my life even as a toddler) and I had the chicken pox. This was when I was about 6 years old. I was given a heavy dose of predisone. Prednise is a corticosteroid. This stuff is very powerful and helps athsmatics during bad times. I've had this on and off over my life. Some of the effects are insulin resistence, loss of metabolism, increase in hunger, challky bones, teeth rot.

I was never given the option or told the side effects (heck I was a child). Needless to say I developed a 'weight problem'. Growing up with two other brothers who are 2 years apart and they are both skinny and I am overweight - it had noting to do with my upbringing!

I've been called all sorts of names and de-graded and humilated in all kinds of situations and by all manner of people - from childhood up until adulthood.

Never once was my medical history taken in account - when 'professionals' addressed my weight problem. From a yound age the judgements of others, and the diagnosis was - "too much eating" "Not enough exercise".

Because I grew up in North Queensland - No body had heard of the Atkins diet or any sort of modified carbohydrate diet! I have been on hundreds of diets which the main crux was "lessening calorie intake'.

It was when I turned 25 years of Age, when I first heard of The Atkins Diet. Having been a Weight Watcher Yo-yo re-joiner for many years, I knew the low fat low cal dogma well (even though it was not sustainable!). My friend and his girlfriend showed me this book and it said you can eat bacon and eggs for breakfast and calories weren't an issue - just carbo intake! Straight away I said 'that's crazy'!!!,...

I mean..... it's 'my fault' I'm this big, because I can't stick to reducing my calories ? .... right ??????

I 'tried' Atkins for a few years. You know how you here thses storiues about people who rattle off the diets the have tried (including atkins) usually before they try the wonder that is Weight Loss Surgery ? Well I believe they were like mean - not sticking out the first two weeks. For years I wouldn't get past the first 8 days before going back to carb addiction.

This year in July I was at my lowest, and with the help of an Australian Low forum I decided to give it a proper try. This time I was successful and I have discovered just how easy it has begun!

As a side effect, apart from weight loss and improved health - skin etc, I've changed the way I think about everything in life! I don't trust any so-called medical studies and the BS health stories the medical tout. I try to see what the real truth is!

    Thanks for reading!

                      Hi Dave

Great to hear from another Aussie, and congrats on the weight already lost. This is so easy, isn't it? It seems almost sinful to eat so much and lose weight.

I started at 131 kgs and am down to 108 after 15 weeks. This former couch potato now goes to the gym 5 mornings a week and has just signed up with a personal trainer for 12 weeks.

I have so much energy npow it's unbelievalbe, I am not depressed any more, and I feel in control of my life rather than just hanging on for the ride.

This board is great for support and has lots of great resources to help us along our Atkins road. Good luck for the rest of your Atkins WOE. By the way, what approx weight are you aiming for?
