  • I'm Tired of Being Tired

    Hello all,
I am a mother of 4 and weigh in at over 300 pounds. I am so ashamed of myself and ashamed for my kids. I have had many health problems that could be helped or eliminated by my loss of weight. I just can't seem to stay going. I feel miserable. This is my last hope before I will have to have surgery (to be later in 2006 probably). The less weight you have, the quicker your recover and less scarring.

I am so glad to have found this site. It will help me so much to be with others going through the same life-changing challenge.

    Thank You for having me.

        Welcome to ADBB!

I'm glad you're here! And you never know, once you begin Atkins and start loving this way of eating and life, you might decide you can do it without the surgery!

If you're interested in journaling, head down to the Miscellaneous Forum and look for Journal Chat and start a journal, there's a rowdy crowd there that will keep you up and on your toes!

Lot's of new exercise challenges are starting up now too!

Re: I'm Tired of Being Tired

Since everyone else has pointed you in the directions you should go and "can't miss" stops on the board, I just wanted to welcome you to the site. I was exactly in the same spot March 2005 of at my wit's end, and doing research on Weight Loss Surgery. I figured that was my only hope. Then I found out about Atkins from my brother (who lost a bunch of weight) and met a bunch of other big losers in the Century Club forum here, like Papajack and IrishIrish. Suddenly, I had hope that I might actually be able to lose some of the weight. I only hope you find someone like those two guys to inspire you here at ADBB.

Welcome again to ADBB, I am glad as well you found our Atkineer family.

Re: I'm Tired of Being Tired

One question I must ask you is this. Is there any other name that we could call you? As I feel that referring to you as "fat and lazy" just doesn't feel right.

Re: I'm Tired of Being Tired

Good point about the name. I think it would help to have a more positive name to help you have a more positive outlook.

I know it all seems a bit overwhelming right now. It's hard to see the forrest for the trees. But, once you get started and shed some of the pounds, your perspective will change. A part of losing weight is mental. Try surrounding yourself with positive things and supportive people.

You've taken a really good first step by coming here. Visit often. We'd love to help you.

Re: I'm Tired of Being Tired

I agree with Sheshy and Richt! Let's find you a more positive name....we do not mean to appear to be picking on you, just that, part of this battle of the bulge we all face is mentally changing the way we view ourselves mentally! Yes...we all have/have had major weight problems, that is why we are here! I can soooo relate to your feelings! As you can see, I started out with a similar negative sign in name..."Is thin possibe?" Now I do believe that"THIN IS POSSIBLE!" And you will arrive there, too, and we will help you the whole way!

As you can see from my stats, I was almost as heavy as you say you are. I also have several children (More than 4!) and I understand where you are at! Please hear me...from the heart of one "former" overweight mom to another, believe me, you can do this! You can conquer the beast. Just take it one step at a time. When I started on my journey, I was so overwhelmed! There were so many things in my life, bad habits that I needed to weed out, that I thought I could never do it. I even asked my Dr., "Can the fat really go away?" I didn't believe it was possible when I looked at my obese body and could pinch roll after roll of fat. But it did, and it is! Start off by making a list of all of the things you need to change, and then choose just ONE item to work on for two weeks(or longer if need be) and when you feel like you have success with that area, move onto another thing on your list. For example, my list looked like this:

                  1. Drink more water.
                  2. Give up sugared drinks.
                  3. Exercise somehow...just move each day...even if it hurts.
                  4. Add more veggies to my plate.
                  5. Add more fruits to my plate.
                  6. Stop participating in negative "head talk" to myself.

If I would have had to change each of these things at the same time, I can tell you I would have failed! That is how I had tried things in the past. Changing one thing at a time, that was doable for me. "Inch by inch, it's a cinch...mile by mile it's a trial!"And before I knew it I was gaining ground on this monster that has had a hold on me for the past 20 years! And you can, too!

The other thing you HAVE to do is get Dr. Atkins book and read it, and read it, and read it, and read it again. Everytime I re-read it I glean more information and learn something new. I praise God for Dr. Atkins and his plan. He has helped me understand how my body works in relation to food and balancing my blood sugar levels. This is KEY!

God bless you on your journey. Keep posting so we can encourage you along the way. And by the way, I am sure that you have many wonderful attributes that can describe you better that fat and lazy! We believe in you...now believe in yourself!

                  Blessings!

p./s. I hope to post some before and after pics of myself (as soon as I figure out how!) that will prove to you that major change is possible!

Re: I'm Tired of Being Tired

Dear fat & lazy (they are right - gotta change that). How about 'tired of fat'.

I too was investigating surgery, but I saw so many horro stories that it scared me rigid! I picked up Dr A's book in the 'el cheapo' bin at the supermarket and it is the best $4.20 I ever spent.

As you can see below, I was 288.5 lbs! I lost 24 of those lbs on Induction - yes - in just 14 days! That proved to me I was definitely on the right track and has been my motivation. In 16 weeks I have now lost 50lbs. Yes, FIFTY! You CAN do this - and without expensive and risky surgery.

I have so much energu now it is unbelievable. I used to drag myself through the day and could barely get up the steps without stopping halfway up to pant. Now, it is hardly any effort. My feet, hips and back don't hurt all the time. I am in week 9 at teh gym and working our 4-5 days per week. I would NEVER have had the energy for that before.

I did some mild exercise right from the start. Due to ankle injuries, I can't walk far oin hard surfaces, so to start I used an old 'air-walker' at home. I could barely last 5 mins at the start but quickly found my fitness & endurance built up. Why not take the kids for a walk when they get home from school. You can start with just one small block and go a littel further each week. You'll be pleasantly suprised to realise how quickly you'll see the benefits of healthy eating and sensible exercise.

My partner is not doing this WOE, he doesn't have hte huge problem with weight I have, but he is very supportive. When he is having the same dinner as me, I just cook him extras such as some rice, or mashed potato (yes, I sometimes have a tiny spoonful to taste - but did not do that even once on Induction). So you can still cater for the family while sticking to the diet yourself.

You will NOT be hungry. Eat lots of fresh veggies and try to avoid the processed food, even if it says low-carb. I think this is where all my eenrgy comes from. Keep a journal - I have bought a special 2006 diary at the cheap shop and in it goes all my food, my exercise performed, and some thoughts on the day (eg time of month, if I felt down, busy days at work etc). This helps me see what makes me take a rest day from teh gym and plan my food/exercise schedule better.

This is a great forum, and you'll get lost of support. BTW, how tall are you? Good luck, and keep posting!
