  • Getting Married in 38 Days

Hi, I stumbled upon this board by accident, looking for Atkins success stories to help me stay on track. I am 5'3 and I weigh 265. ( I've gained 35 lbs in the past 2 years. Today is my first day of actually starting. I've been meaning to for quite a while, but I've been under so much stress lately, moving, trying to close on my first home, and trying to plan my wedding (in 38 days!!!!), I haven't had the willpower for anything. Yesterday, my wedding dress arrived, and I bairly got into it. I went to climb on top of the bed so that my mom could take a picture of the dress, and my zipper split open. I wanted to cry, so for now, I guess that will be my motivation. I am a carb lover. My dinner always consists of at least 2 carbs, bread and potatoes. Or bread and rice. Or bread and Pasta. What can I say, I was raised in the south on fried potatoes and cornbread, mashed potatoes and biscuits. But It is hitting home. My wedding is in 38 days, and I broke the zipper on my wedding dress. I need all the support I can get, so I am very glad that I came across this board. You all seem to be a very supportive group of people. I hope that I can be a success story.

Re: Getting Married in 38 Days

Hello LovelyLady! Welcome to ADBB. I'm sorry to hear about your wedding dress trauma. After a couple of weeks on induction you will find you hardly miss those potatoes and other starchy things. Look on the recipe threads here to find low-carb versions of things. By the time your wedding day comes you will not only be able to fit into your dress without breaking the zipper, but you will be able to wear it comfortably and move around in it. If you have any question feel free to ask. And don't worry if you start to feel unwell in the next few days. It's just all the toxins and bad things leaving your body. By the time the wedding comes you'll be feeling great and your skin and hair will all be looking great too because of all the water you're drinking and from getting all the garbage out of your system. Do you have a copy of DANDR 2002? If not, you should get it. It explains everything in detail. I read mine all the time to keep me on top of things. Good luck!

Re: Getting Married in 38 Days

Lovely lady...welcome to our family. Congratulations on your upcoming marriage. I'm so glad that you have made the committment to get healthy as you start your new life as a married woman. You are about the same size as I was when I began this journey March 2004. I am 5'3" and was 285 pounds.

Please do read the book and understand what Atkins is all about. Dr. Atkins devised the key to losing the weight and if you read and understand how it works...it will be easier for you to do. As for being a carb addict...I believe we all fall into that category. Most of us were raised on potatoes, bread, rice and beans and junkfood in between. Don't think of Atkins as 'giving up' things you love. Instead - look at it as a new adventure in your life. A life filled with foods that will make you look and feel great. Read the recipe section and pick out menus that you will like and can use in place of meals that you have eaten in the past. For instance, if you like pizza...you don't have to give it up. There is an Atkins friendly pizza you can still enjoy. If you like potatoes - mash up cauliflower and use it as a substitute.

Remember Atkins isn't about feeling deprived and sad...it is about feeling satisfied and healthy and happy. We are all learning to live our new life-styles and sharing in our experiences. Once again...congratulations on the wedding and please keep us posted.
          Starting Date 3/12/04 285/165/145 - F

Dedication gives wings to our dreams and keeps them in flight! In One Word...COMMITTMENT.

Re: Getting Married in 38 Days

i understand about the southern food. i grew up in virginia and was raised on potatoes, biscuits (sweet potato and regular), fried green tomatoes, fried okra, etc. i've only been at this for 10 days and while i remember that i like those things i don't feel at all deprived that i'm not having them.

Re: Getting Married in 38 Days

I'm from TN so I understand the southern food thing, too. I also love carbs, pizza, candy, any kind of junk food. However, right now I want to lose weight so bad that I'm not thinking about those things at all. What works for me is that I remind myself that it'll taste good for max five minutes, but after that I'll be so disappointed with myself. Plus, if I throw myself off with one piece of pizza, it may take several days to start losing weight again. It's just not worth it. Stick with it and you'll feel better, look better, and I dont know about anyone else, but my skin is a lot better. Best of luck!

Re: Getting Married in 38 Days

Thanks for the great support, everyone. It's getting awfully tough today. One of the ladies I work with brought a big bowl of reese cups in and set them on my desk because I am right here by the door and therefore the first desk our clients walk by when they come in. I've resolved not to look at it, but the smell alone is killing me, as I sit here with my lettuce and turkey It's not that I don't like lettuce and turkey, they are both very good things, but I usually have them smashed between 2 pieces of bread. My poor fiance is trying to help me, he brought me home a salad last night to bring to work today, but its covered delicious things like tomatoes and about 20 of the huge green olives, because he knows that I love them so. I haven't had the oppertunity to buy the book, so I don't know a whole lot. My dad, step mother and brother lost about 20 lbs each when they did it about 2 years ago, for about a month each. I at the time was still doing the point system. So I am doing what my step mom tells me to. Is there anything pseudo-sweet that I can have while I am in induction? ohhhhh, I want to fit into my wedding dress. You all have given me more strength to say NO to the reeses! I think I am going to have to be reading these posts every 15 minutes of the day, though. Oh Lordy, I hope that this gets easier.
Thank You All for the encouragement, it means the world!

Re: Getting Married in 38 Days

It does get easier. Go to the induction area and read the Stickies at the top of the page. You can have tomatos and green olives, just more limited amounts than before, for now. Don't give up. You can toatlly do this and like Ebonyspice said, you can totally make a difference in 38 days!!

Go ahead and move that bowl of reese's to the second desk. Just tell them you need it else where for a few days. Unless it is company policy that candy has to sit on your desk, they should be a little more understanding about it. If you were an alcoholic they wouldn't keep a keg on your desk, you can bet your butt on it.

You can do this!! If you need anything at all feel free to send me a private message. I will write back!!
I was 5'2" and 276 lbs the first time I went on Atkins. I lost 112 lbs before my baby. If I can do it, you can do it!! I live in the south too. so I know exactly what you are talking about!!

Wow, I love hearing about your all's success. I hope that I do as well. I am bidding on the book on e-bay right now, as I never have time to go to the store! I hope that I am able to lose enough weight to be comfortable walking down the aisle at my wedding. I've been planning my wedding since I was like, 10. (I'm 23 now) I also hope to lose all this ucky weight, as my fiance and I have struck a deal, when I lose 100 lbs, he quits smoking. I guess I will go ahead and go to the picture section and put my wedding dress fiasco photo as my starting pic. That way, I can be held accountable. At least to myself. Plus, I can post a pic of me wearing the same dress on my wedding day and show you all what a hot mama I am becomming (LOL).
Thank you all for the support, I really need it!

And the candy? It has now been moved I assume? You're doing great. I hope you get your book soon. It's packed with all kinds of great info for you. Read it from the beginning too. Don't just start at the food plan. Reading from the beginning really helps you understand everything so it's easier to stick to it.
