  • My introduction to Adkins and a new way of life for me.

    Hello All,

I wanted to take a few minutes and introduce myself. I’m sorry if this turns out to be really long. I feel that I need to explain my situation in order for everyone to be able to better offer advice and support for me. Anyways on to the introduction:

My name is Aprile I am 34 years old and a recovering/recovered anorexic. Yes you read that right I am anorexic as you really never truly get over it you just learn how to better control it. 2 Years ago at my lowest I weighed 92 lbs at 5’5. I wore a size 12 little girls clothing. And at the height of my illness I would go 3 weeks with no food. I lived on coffee and water pretty scary isn’t it? Well after a lot of support from my Drs. And family I realized I had a problem and let them put me on a “diet” see diets aren’t just for losing weight they are also for gaining weight as well. Mainly diet is just another way to describe what you eat. I could eat Twinkies and cupcakes all day and still call it a diet.

But anyways. I was put on a very high calorie, fat, carb diet and finally started putting on the weight. I was not allowed to exercise as with my illness I had a habit of taking it to extremes (7 days a week 3 hours or more a day). Finally 2 years of therapy and eating all that food (which by the way was devastating to me. I would cry with each bite for a very long time) I have finally got to a weight that they feel comfortable to release me from therapy and allow me to exercise again. I am at 150lbs and to be honest it kills me to be here. They had me put on extra weight to allow me to have wiggle room to lose and still be at a comfortable (i.e.: healthy weight). So here I am now. Ready to try and lose a few pounds and tone up. I have spoken to my nutrionist and she has said I could follow a low carb diet to help me get to comfortable weight while still being able to eat. I need to have a diet that requires me to eat as the low calorie diets cause me to spiral and I just end up not eating at all if that makes sense.

I have been given the ok to go back down to 125-130lbs if I promise to exercise and eat sensibly. I will be under a Drs. Watch and will have periodic weigh ins to make sure I am not going overboard. Once I am down to my healthy weight I would like to use Atkins to maintain and also help me further my recovery.

Anyways that is my story. I would very much like to be a active part of this board for moral support and advice. I plan to start my induction tomorrow as I have the book.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Re: My introduction to Adkins and a new way of life for me.

    Aprile,

First of all, congratulations on dealing with your issues and confronting them head on.

You will find Atkins to be very fulfilling and effective if done properly. By controlling the carbs you consume and eating from the approved foods list, you will get the veggies you need for good health, and you will be burning fat all the time. This way of eating is higher fat, which means you can have really decadent steaks and butter and bacon and on and on. If you haven't read the book yet, please get a copy. I urge you to ask any questions that may come up and to take a look at all the great forums and thread.

Good luck with your new way of life. It's a great "diet."

      Hi Narina,

welcome to this board. I hope you find a way to deal with all your eating disorder issues - maybe you might want to check in at the ofurms for emotional eating and overcoming addictions on this board.

It is very sensible to go on a low carb diet if calorie restriction will be a trigger for you, and I am glad you have ther personal and medical support to back you up and to monitor your eating habits, so you cannot fall back into anorexic patterns.

At 5'5, I am sure you are aware of that, you are not terribly overweight with 150 lbs, and I guess a lot of your feeling uneasy will improve with exercising and toning up your body, and of course to feed your muscles and brain you need to eat quality food, that is, low carb.

If you need a shoulder to cry on or have any questions regarding this lfiestyle, feel free to ask. There are no stupid questions
