  • Second Time Around

I was on Atkins in 2003 and lost 50 pounds, got down to 190 or so. I did well for about 15 months as I recall. I felt great, my wife said I looked great. I had normal blood pressure for the first time in my adult life. I could sleep through the night without being restless and constantly waking up.

I think it all started coming apart for me when I got "caught up" in the Low Carb frenzy at the time and started buying endless amounts of "frankenfoods". I had low carb ice cream, cheese cakes, shakes, bars, cookies, Bread, Hot cereal, Cold cereal, and on and on and on. As an engineer, my mind would never let me buy into the "net carb" thing with the sugar alcohols. However, my heart argued otherwise. Within no time, the cravings for chocolate, fast food, etc. all came back with a vengeance (as did the pounds).

Next, I tried to convince myself I could do the Weight watchers thing, knowing that I always wind up starving and frustrated. I couldn't stick with it.

One good thing that happened during this time was I re-started exercising and haven't stopped since. I began running and over a year' time trained and completed a half marathon (The Flying Pig Half Marathon) and a full marathon (The Detroit Free Press Marathon, October '05, 4:48:50). I will always cherish the accomplishment, but something was wrong. Even though I was running 50+ miles per week, my weight never dropped. I was not happy with my time. Completing the marathon at 5'10" and 225 pounds was not real comfortable. I had assumed the running (and mostly following WW) would get me down to my goal weight. It didn't happen.

Sorry to post so much, but it helps me to be accountable.

I used to post on other sites (BigDaddy2). Looking back, I don't think they really supported doing "Atkins by the Book". It was basically a big "I just cheated for the 10th day in a row" pity party. Know what I mean? I found this board recently and I love the "tough love" advice. I don't need someone telling me it's OK to eat 30 atkins bars and 10 atkins shakes and tell me I'm doing Atkins.

    Going forward:
I want to get down to goal weight.
Run a sub 4 hour marathon.

    I will do this by:
    Do a "Boot Camp" Induction
Re-read and then Re-read DANDR 2002 (already started)
Follow the book exactly, stage by stage, rung by rung
Continue exercise, base building then marathon training
Make small changes in my daily routine that over the long haul can
make this a lifestyle I can maintain rather than a Diet.

Thank all of you for providing such a supportive place to come to.

Rich, Congratulations and welcome back. I understand your needing to keep it all accountable. Perhaps you need to have a journal so that you can go back and re-affirm your committment to yourself and losing the weight. Thats what I do.

Best wishes and keep us posted. We all care and want to share in your celebrations as you succeed.

        Hey Rich!

Welcome back to Atkins, or maybe more correctly it would be welcome to the real Atkins for the first time!

Yep, this is definitely a good place to be. Lot's of good people here who are willing to share their experiences, and knowledge with those of us who need it. And good for you for wanting to do it right!

Best of luck to you in both your weight loss goals and your running ones!

Calling it GOAL at this point. I'm happy with where I am now and hope to stay there, or maybe even take it down a little more.

Hi Rich and welcome to !!!

Wow, as far as I'm concerned you've got the 'hard' stuff figured out. Like why you gained and what you won't do again, that's awesome!

Congrats on the marathons, and great goals! You might be interested in the Exercise forum...we have some avid runners...and maybe the Second Time Around Club (STAC) in the Support section of the board.

Hope to see you around the board!
