  • Seasoned dieter :) with questions

Hello. I've been reading this board -- especially the stickies, which are terrific!! -- for about two weeks now and have decided to take The Plunge. I'm old (50-something) and fat (need to lose more than 100), tired and worn, and a bit nervous. I've been re-reading DANDR and will start on Friday.

I've been dieting since my mother declared me fat at 13 (I'm 5'8 and weighed 146 pounds then). But I've only done two serious, successful diets. Once, at about 25, I did a Stillman variant, eating chicken, salad and fruit in two meals a day. I lost 30 pounds in 30 days, got to a comfortable weight (185) and stopped. Stayed there for years. About ten years later, I'd regained that 30 pounds -- new job stress -- and went to Weight Watchers. It was more high protein then (6 ounces protein to 2 starches a day) and I lost the 30 pounds, more slowly, but comfortably. Kept that off for 15 years.

I've been gaining 5-6 pounds a year for the past ten years and have made many half-hearted attempts to take it off. Low carb (tried Protein Power) certainly works, but I found it hard to stick to. Then I'd try WW, and I'd lose a few pounds, but would be eating mostly bread. With butter. Back to Low Carb, and in between, of course, I'd gain that 5-6 pounds.

I've been reading forums and noticed that most of the people with a lot of weight to lose who have been successful have done it through Atkins, so I'm trying that. I'll start induction on Friday. I'm reducing carbs this week -- I think one of the reasons I had trouble sticking with low carb is that I'd go from 300 carbs a day to 20 and it was too much. Sweet snacks and bread are my downfall, and I'm trying to cut back on those.

I'm sorry -- diidn't mean to write a book! Two questions. The book says that sour cream is an "occasional food." Does that mean beef stroganoff, say, is out? One tablespoon a day might be less than in a serving of a dish like that. Another questiion: snacking. On low carb, I will NEED to eat something mid-afternoon or be dizzy, faint, etc. Atkins says "carb controlled snacks" but I didn't see any examples. Hard boiled eggs? What do you all eat?

Thank you in advance. BTW, I'm female, single, a teacher.

Welcome to ADBB! Sounds like you are on the right track.

I'm not 100% sure on the sour cream--I think as long as you count your carbs for it for the day, and don't eat it every day, you'll be fine. It may be a potential staller like heavy whipping cream.

I have dizziness issues, too. HB eggs are great if you like them, also raw veggies, cheese sticks, pepperoni slices (check ingredients and salt content)...the possibilities are endless.

Welcome, and good luck. I love string cheese or cucumber dipped in Ken's Bleu Cheese Dressing (2 carbs per serving) for snacks. I really must say, I don't feel like snacking very often. GOOD LUCK and YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!

Welcome! The amount of sour cream you're talking about isn't a problem. You just can't have a cup a day because it's too carby in quantity.

My favorite induction snacks were pepperoni chips nuked in the mircrowave (sometimes with a little cheese on top) and celery stuffed with cream cheese. Or, just a couple of tablespoons of cream cheese straight. I LOVE that stuff!

Thank you for the very warm welcomes, Allie, sunflowergrl and lawyerchick! And thank you for the snack ideas. I don't have access to a refrigerator during the day, so that's one issue (hard for water, too, as I hate room temperature water). When I get past one week of low carb, I haven't wanted snacks, either -- I've barely wanted food, which was hard in a different way. I remember having to force myself to eat. I think I'm looking forward to that again!

I look forward to getting to know all of you. It looks like a very friendly and supportive board, and I'm happy it's focused on people who are actively working on health and fitness, and not primarily comforting the fallen

You are welcome!!! Maybe you could get a cooler mug?? I have a Lions one (I love football!!) and just keep it in the freezer till I need to use it. Maybe you could get an Igloo cooler/lunch box to bring your lunch and snacks in?

Welcome. Cheese is my afternoon snack, or sometimes vegetables (celery, beans, snow peas etc.

Once you are at nuts rung on OWL, you can have those. I have a tablespoon or so of macadamia nuts or macadamias and walnuts, occasionally with a few cashews. Nuts are great because you can keep a small sealed pack in your purse.

More thanks! A cooler isn't easy for me, as I take a bus, have several blocks to walk to and from the bus, and am almost always carrying a very heavy bookbag. Cheese and nuts are certainly good ideas for further down the road. Thanks again!

There are lunchbags that are flexible and insulating...I would check one of those out. That way, you could fold it up real small when you were finished. You could keep a half ice/half water bottle in there to keep it chilled, plus it's great to have a cold drink at the end of the day.
