Hello. I've been reading this board -- especially the stickies, which are terrific!! -- for about two weeks now and have decided to take The Plunge. I'm old (50-something) and fat (need to lose more than 100), tired and worn, and a bit nervous. I've been re-reading DANDR and will start on Friday.
I've been dieting since my mother declared me fat at 13 (I'm 5'8 and weighed 146 pounds then). But I've only done two serious, successful diets. Once, at about 25, I did a Stillman variant, eating chicken, salad and fruit in two meals a day. I lost 30 pounds in 30 days, got to a comfortable weight (185) and stopped. Stayed there for years. About ten years later, I'd regained that 30 pounds -- new job stress -- and went to Weight Watchers. It was more high protein then (6 ounces protein to 2 starches a day) and I lost the 30 pounds, more slowly, but comfortably. Kept that off for 15 years.
I've been gaining 5-6 pounds a year for the past ten years and have made many half-hearted attempts to take it off. Low carb (tried Protein Power) certainly works, but I found it hard to stick to. Then I'd try WW, and I'd lose a few pounds, but would be eating mostly bread. With butter. Back to Low Carb, and in between, of course, I'd gain that 5-6 pounds.
I've been reading forums and noticed that most of the people with a lot of weight to lose who have been successful have done it through Atkins, so I'm trying that. I'll start induction on Friday. I'm reducing carbs this week -- I think one of the reasons I had trouble sticking with low carb is that I'd go from 300 carbs a day to 20 and it was too much. Sweet snacks and bread are my downfall, and I'm trying to cut back on those.
I'm sorry -- diidn't mean to write a book! Two questions. The book says that sour cream is an "occasional food." Does that mean beef stroganoff, say, is out? One tablespoon a day might be less than in a serving of a dish like that. Another questiion: snacking. On low carb, I will NEED to eat something mid-afternoon or be dizzy, faint, etc. Atkins says "carb controlled snacks" but I didn't see any examples. Hard boiled eggs? What do you all eat?
Thank you in advance. BTW, I'm female, single, a teacher.
