  • It is time to do something.

    Hello everyone,

I started Atkins yesterday (Feb 27), and thought I should say hello. I have been crawling this board for some time now and finally took the steps necessary to get started. I had a complete physical last week and everything (except my weight and my smoking habit) came out normal.

    So, why start Atkins?

I am tired. Always tired. I work as a server/bartender and seem to be fine while at work, but when not on the clock, I feel tired and sleepy. I want to feel energetic.

I want to look better. For me. For my wife.

I want to be healthy for my family. I want to set a better example for my children. I want my sons to have an active, energetic dad.

I want to be able to wear stylish clothing again. I want to pay the normal price instead of extra for "extended" sizes. I hate paying 10-25% more at the big and tall stores.

Pretty sobering thoughts for someone as laid back as myself. But, my actions (or lack of) have brought me to my current state, and only I can change that.

I promise that this will be the end of my self-loathing. I feel better now that I have taken the first step. And, thank you all for the support you have given me without even knowing it. The support you show to each other, as well as the wealth of information shared here, is amazing.

I CAN do this, I WILL do this.

Re: It is time to do something.

Hello. Welcome to the forum. Congratulations on making the decision to get healthy and feel better. You have some great motivators in your wife and children. I can tell you from experience that losing the weight and gaining energy has changed my whole outlook on life. I am living life now instead of dreading it and watching everyone else have fun. It has enhanced every part of my life. Especially my self-esteem. I am in control now of what I eat and what I do.

You can do this. The secret is to PLAN your moves. Don't do anything that isn't in your plan to get healthy. Temptations will always be there - you just have to change your attitude about them. Realize that they are not good for you and choose the things that are going to help you get to your goal.

BEST WISHES, welcome and please keep us posted on your progress!!

      Thank you dreamof145.

Only on day 2 and I know what you mean. I did my serious shopping last night. I was amazed at the amount of info I had overlooked on the nutrition label. Hidden carbs everywhere! I have meals planned out for the week. After looking around for recipes, I am excited. I have found a ton of mouth-watering recipes.

I think my main problem was my previous way of eating. I would usually eat only once a day, and it was a carb feast. Now, I plan on doing it right.

Good for you! I think you'll be amazed at how great you feel once you start this woe. Many of us go through a brief period of feeling crappy when starting induction. We call it the 'induction flu'. Basically it's your body detoxing. If you do get it, I promise you it won't last long and you'll feel great afterwards.

You're also so right about hidden carbs in the foods we buy. It's important to read the list of ingredients on foods as well. For example, it may list a low carb count on the label but contain an ingredient that's not on the acceptable food list for induction or whatever level of Atkins you're on. It's a learning curve! You'll do great. Welcome aboard.

Welcome!! If you get Induction flu, don't let it worry you. I had it pretty bad, but it only lasts a few days, and I feel great now!!! Do you have DANDR?? Make sure to drink lots of water, it helps the weight come off so much!! I can't wait to hear how good you are doing and how much more energy you have!
What would we do without it?

Yes, I do have DANDR 2002. I have had it for over a year. It has been staring at me the whole time. I feel that weight can be a form of addiction. Or, perhaps being an addict to comfort and denial.

I realized the first step is indeed to admit your problem to yourself, and have the desire to make a positive change.
