  • Atkins Fat Question

    Hi,
I started atkins for the first time about 2 weeks ago. I was eating mostly protein with some fat but then I read on this bulletin board that i should be eating 60% fat to 40% protein (i am staying on the induction phase)...right now i am definitely eating more protein than fat...(maybe thats because I still have fear of fat from my days of low-fat diets). Should I be eating more fat than protein and is it ok to get this extra fat from mayonaise? For some reason i feel major guilt when i eat mayonaise.
    thanks so much!

    Re: Atkins Fat Question

Whoa, some carbs please! Remeber your veggies! *hug*

10 percent for carbs is good, 30 for meats. More fat than protein is needed if you want to get into the fat burning stage. It's ok, you'll get used to it, and you'll love the results!

      Re: Atkins Fat Question

Atkins is a high fat diet and that's because we switch our bodies into burning fat as our primary fuel source. During induction we're eating around 65% fat, 30% protein and 5% carbs, most of which come from veggies from the acceptable food list. It is hard to get into that frame of mind of eating fats. If you're using fitday.com you'll see that it's really not that difficult to get around those percentages especially if you're able to eat cheese, heavy cream and eggs. Olives and avocado are great high fat snacks too.

Olive oil and butter added to your veggies will get that fat percentages up too. It really doesn't take that much either.

Be sure and use www.fitday.com to figure your stats. I use it everyday.

          Re: Atkins Fat Question

Thanks everyone! Today is my first day on the board and i am overwhelmed by the quick responses I really appreciate the support. I am definitely eating my veges -- sorry i forgot to list that.
My other question was about mayonaise...i was just wondering cause it's not on the acceptable food list and yet it is listed in the book as being ok. For some reason i feel guilty when eating it....it's ok to get some of my fat from mayonaise, right?

Oops, sorry about that. Regular, full fat mayo is fine. Don't buy any 'light' mayo's or reduced fat kinds. Try to find a brand that doesn't contain sugar. Mayonnaise-like salad dressings like Miracle Whip are not okay. Welcome aboard!
