Hi! I'm glad to have found an Atkins board! The last weight loss support board I found wasn't Atkins friendly.
My name is Veda. I'm 41 and I've been really ill. After complaining for the last ten years about arthritis like pain in my joints, unexplained weight gain, and lethargy, I finally got a diagnosis. I went in for a full exam and my doctor noticed that I had extremely dry skin on my feet. The skin was actually powdering off. It was like watching a light bulb go on over his head. He said he needed to test my thyroid levels. My thyroid was way out of wack. While my cholesterol level was normal, my triglycerides were way up in the "warning Will Robinson", going to have a stroke any minute range.
My blood pressure is also higher than normal. My doctor perscribed thyroid replacement pills and strongly encouraged a low carb diet. I bought a copy of DANDR and started the same day he called me.
That was six months ago. My weight has gone from 340 pounds to 282 pounds. My triglyceride level is down to high normal. My cholesterol is still normal but my blood pressure is still in the pre-hypertensive range. The lack of thyroid hormone was actually causing most of the pain in my joints.
I'm very happy with, and very serious about, doing Atkins for the rest of my life. I can't explain how much better I feel. I don't have a goal weight yet because I've never been below 160 pounds in my adult life. My short term goal is 200 pounds, and we will see how it goes from there. I have support from both my family and my doctor which is making this change pleasant and easy.
