  • I'm a newbie

    Hi Everyone!

My husband and I went on the atkins diet about 2 months ago. I've lost 35.5 pounds since then. I have done the diet before, but had to stop due to my pregnancies, so now, I'm ready to lose the weight. We don't want anymore children, right now...maybe later, if I can talk my husband into it.

So, I am so motivated to stick with this low carb lifestyle. I have almost got the entire church on this diet, so it's so exciting that other family members and friends are doing it right along with us. We can all share great recipes and encourage each other.

The only problem is that I haven't started exercising yet. I know that I need to so badly, but I keep making excuses. I don't want to be a skinny fat, or someone who has a lot of flab hanging. I want to be tight and curvy, so if any of you pros want to give some advice of how I should start my exercising routine, please let me know! I have 2 little kids (almost 4 years old and a 4 month old). My husband doesn't have a lot of weight to lose, maybe 20 lbs, but I think if he started exercising he would tone up and look really good. I don't want him to be a skinny scroney (sp?) man, but a thick and strong looking man and I'm afraid that if he doesn't start exercising and weight lifting, his age is going to work against him, since he's on this low carb diet with me, and then he's going to look too puney.

He used to be a marine so the thought of running or doing strenuous exercise is not a priority for him. He hates the hot weather down here in Florida, so now that it's getting hotter, it's even harder to get him to want to do anything out in the heat. He's a soccer coach, so he gets out and is active, but it's not enough to show results.

SO GIVE ME SOME IDEAS AND SUGGESTIONS. I need to get moving and so does my husband....we're very busy and have short time, so we need a plan that will work for us!

    Thank you!

Can you start with a daily walk? You can even bring the kids along, then you'll all get some exercise. What about some dvd's you can do in the coolness (I'm assuming you have a/c) of your own home? I like Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds videos. She's got lots of them and I think you can find some in Walmart (or at her website online). She starts off with a 1 mile walk but you can get videos up to 4 miles (I don't know if there are longer ones). I have the 1 and 2 mile and they are great for those just starting out and the 2 mile only takes 30 minutes so it's easy to squeeze in every day. Once you get started you won't be able to stop. It's addictive and you'll start resenting things that get in the way of exercising. Really. But the first thing to do is start somewhere. Is there an exercise that you like doing? i.e. tennis, swimming, biking, etc. That's a good place to start too.

Hi and welcome to ADBB and Atkins!

That's great that your DH is following Atkins too, that's such a big help!

And regarding exercise, I agree with Lady...walking is the best way to start out...outside when you can and dvd's when you have to be inside. I know some gals that have small kids that either do their workout during naptime or just make it a game and let the kids join the fun!

Glad you're here and we'll see you around the board!

            Welcome!

Congrats on the baby and having dh going along with you on this weight loss journey.

You're welcome to journal land with the rest of us, and I totally agree with the exercise...I'm a walker, swimmer, and novice weight trainer (so novice that my muscles scream at me when I walk in the weight room).

            Best wishes on your journey!

Welcome! 35.5 lbs in two months, congrats!

I'd recommend weight lifting to anyone who want to improve their overall health. The benefits are numerous enough that everyone can find a personal reason to workout.

For example, after your late twenties, you start to lose bone density and muscle mass. By age 30, our bodies no longer make bone as quickly as old bone is broken down. Women are more likely than men to suffer from osteoporosis. Over age 50, 1 of every 2 women and 1 of every 8 men will develop the disease.

Weightlifting can reverse those losses and can eventually make you even stronger.

Besides this sidetrack, you burn more calories at rest the more muscle you have, and you burn calories while you lift.

If you move quickly from set to set, it can also become aerobic exercise as well.

              Best Wishes!

Welcome and Congrats on your loss! That's great!

I agree. You'll be surprised what just a daily walk will do for you. That's how I started and it was great. Then as you get more active and more energy you can revise your plan. Start including some little things like some crunches or push-ups. You can do all that stuff with the family! Good luck!
