  • Re-Introduction, I suppose.

I've stood at the top of this mountain before, but fallen after taking the plunge. So, here I am again. Starting over. Day 2, and I'm doing decent. The induction flu is starting to hit me hard, and the headaches I get from it have thrown me from the wagon before.

To give a bit of perspective, I suffer from Chronic Daily Headaches, as well as Classic Migraine with Aura. Meaning I have a lot of headaches, and if something triggers it, 4 or so days of Mind-Blowing Migraine pain. Times before I've started this WOE I've triggered a migraine. Part of that reason, I've found out, that caffeine withdrawals trigger them in me. As such, I'm trying to wean myself off of it, but at this point, it is still a part of my daily life. As much as I'm tired of being overweight, 15 years of headaches and migraines has shown me to be mindful of triggers, and my dedication to this WOE has to balance with that. I'll most likely never be free of the headaches and migraines, but I'm hoping to write caffiene off as a trigger through atkins.

Any words of advice for a thrice-times starter? Glad to be back, though. Here's to pushing through it all and finally being thin and free!

I just went through a start over induction so I can completely sympathize on the induction flu. I'm so impressed that you are giving up caffiene! That shows real dedication and I'm sure you are going to excel this time through. I hope to see you around! Have a great day!

        Re: Re-Introduction, I suppose.

My daughter is a migraine sufferer and my heart goes out to you. I just read how caffeine does help with migraines, so If you get one, have a strong cup of coffee along with your meds. It probably would be good to get off the caffeine so you can use it as medication when you have the headache
She also found that meditation helps, 15 minutes of complete relaxation. I would also use fitday.com for a month or so, as many other foods are triggers and you might find that some combintation is getting to you.

Isn't the only reason why they say not to drink caffeinated coffee is because it triggers off sugar cravings? I tried to drink decaf the first time I tried Atkins and I just couldn't do it. The headaches were just too much for me. I went back to regular my 3rd day in and I still lost 10 lbs within the first two weeks. I need to have at least one cup and I am good.

            Thanks all!

Yes, caffiene helps mitigate the pain of a migraine. Unfortunately, because I already usually take a lot of it, in order to get effects, I have to seriously up the doage when I'm having one. Another reason I hope Atkins will help me rid my normal addiction - so when I do have caffiene, a little will go a lot further.

Day 3 broke with a general fealing of junkishness, but only a normal headache - those I'm used to dealing with. A lot of water, my cups of greens, and cold compress to my forehead and base of the skull, and a small amount of caffiene, and I'm managing to keep the worst at bay. So far this is looking to be the smoothest induction I've ever had!

I'm a little late with this reply, but just in case you're checking back... just wanted to give a shout out of welcome from a fellow headache-er! Been suffering with them all my life; mine come with aura as well, and, like you, I also would do just about anything to be rid of the devistating pain and incapacity that comes along in the package.

My triggers, unfortunately, are unavoidable... since estrogen is my culprit. Just wanted to let you know you are not alone, you'll likely find a whole hoarde of people in a similar boat here on this board. Good luck to you - keep up the great work!

                      Mortanis,
Sorry to hear about your headache woes. I just wrote in a few days ago with my own headache experience. I don't claim to have headaches as bad as yours, but I get one every week to week and a half. I don't get the aura, but I get so nauseous, I feel I can't move at times. I got one of my more severe ones Monday of this week when I started on the diet. Feeling better now, but lost some of my resolve. Will do better twomorrow. I hope you have a prescription or something from you doctor to help ease the pain. Imitrex and Maxalt work well for me.
Please keep us posted. As a fellow migraine sufferer, my heart goes out to you!

                        Re: Re-Introduction, I suppose.

No perscriptions. Mostly because I haven't been to a doctor about them since I was in High School. It was a lot worse then, and my parents took me to so many doctors to try and find the reason for my migraines. Cat scans and the like. The best that any doctor ever offered me was 1800mg of ibuprofen a day. I did that for about a week, felt it was too much and went off of it with a "I'll just deal with it - doctor's haven't done anything for me" mentality. My remedies are more general now: cold rag on the head, no bright lights, lots of rest, caffiene and water.

I probably should go talk to my current doctor, who's lightyears better than any of my old ones, and see whats up. I think I'll wait till I've thrown some of these excess pounds off first, though, to give a nice suprise. I also suffer from sleep apnea from being overweight, so with some luck and perserverance, Atkins WOE will help me master 2 major ailments!

Like I said, I doubt I'll ever be free of migraines - they were around long before I gained all the extra weight. But I'd like to master my caffeine problems to be a more useful tool against them!

Mortanis!! I completely understand the suffering of the migraines! I had them BAD in my 20's. Acupuncture totally helped. Maybe that is something you could try? As I approached my 40's, the headaches started kicking up a little bit (nowhere near as bad) and I've been taking Excedrin Migraine for them. It has caffeine in it, which quells the demons. You need to do whatever you can to feel better.

I've heard good words about acupuncture concerning my situation before, too, but never followed through. I really should check my insurance plan and see what is covered, and maybe test it out... there's even a place in my town, I think. Can't hurt! Thanks!
