Re: Hi there I am new 2nd time around

First let me say, WELCOME! I like that you have lots of questions because that means you want to get things right the first time around! The best advice I can give you, and you'll probably hear from others, is that you need to read Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. I am actually rereading it at present. The key to Atkins is doing it exactly right, because if you do it seems the weight melts off of you.

To answer a few of your questions to the best of my ability:
like unlimited diet coke ....is this o.k. ????
Unlimited diet coke is not ok! The best thing to do is completely kick this habit, but if that's not an option try to reduce it as much as possible. Make it a special once or twice a week treat for when you are doing well!

You are only allowed 2 cups of lettuce or other salad vegetables a day, and you must count those carbs!

Fortunately meat is unlimited as long as it isn't heavily processed and you balance it with veggies and fat. It's best to get carbs (from veggies), protein and fat with every meal!

I can't stress how essential it is to read the book!

I'm excited that you are starting up and hope you'll keep me updated on your progress!
    Best Wishes!

Welcome to STAC, glad you found us and glad you joined.... Saty gave you very good answers This is not a high protein diet, its more of a high fat diet, so keep your meals balanced and you will do find.

Re: Hi there I am new 2nd time around

Saty's right, you definitely must read the book, if you don't know the REASONS behind the diet, the medicine and science behind why it works, you won't have the fully motivation to follow it to the letter. Also there's a LOT more to the plan than just avoiding carbs and eating "unlimited" meat.

If you can't afford to buy the book, you can actually read it online at Amazon.com, just search for the word "carbohydrate" and all the pages will be available for reading: link This is also handy if you need to look up a specific reference quickly.

I highly recommend that you join Boot Camp next time it rolls around, you'll have the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the Atkins way of life from the experts. Boot Camp will teach you the RIGHT way to do things, and help keep you on track with support and accountability. They'll also review your menus daily and tell you where you could improve.

Diet coke = no! The caffeine in it is not allowed on this plan, and if you wonder why, read these articles about the impact caffeine has on blood sugar and other aspects of your health:

Re: Hi there I am new 2nd time around

oops, I hit submit by accident before I was done typing!

To answer your question, YES exercise is important!!!! It may be THE most important factor in truly taking control of your body, metabolism and life. If you don't use it, you'll lose it, and that's more true of using your body than anything else I can think of. Not only does exercise directly burn calories, but it elevates your metabolism, and coaxes your body to burn more calories, even when you're NOT exercising. I don't think it's an overstatement to say that exercise is the single most important thing a person can do to improve their health. I used excuses myeslf for 15 years to sit on my butt and not exercise, then I woke up one day, realized I was 35 years old and had wasted the best years of my life wallowing in excuses and depression. I also realized I was heading down the same path as my grandmother who never moved, and who died at 400 pounds, steeped in diabetes, heart problems, losing her vision, having lost the use of her feet and much more. That's not an example I want to follow! If I can do it, anyone can. I was 275 pounds at only 5'2", and so sedentary, that just walking to the mailbox and back was a dreaded and difficult chore for me. It took every bit of willpower in me to make myself take my first walk on February 27, just 7.5 weeks ago, but even on that very first day I was amazed how much better I felt afterward. I could breathe better. I slept better. And it's only gotten easier and better since. Now when I miss a day, I really miss it and can't wait to do it the next, and I am TRULY a different person. It only took a week or two to adjust to walking 2 miles a day at a brisk pace without having to stop to gasp for breath or rest my aching muscles. And now I can run in intervals during the walk, something I haven't been able to do since I was a teenager. I urge you to make this choice. It won't come naturally, but with just a little effort on your part it can become an integral part of your life, and you'll be a different person for it, I promise you. Since you're a stay at home mom, that's even more reason that you NEED to do this, you'll be doing it not for yourself alone, but for your kids as well, since their habits and way of living are learned directly from you (I sure wish my mom had taught me that exercise and health were important!) If you start them on a lifetime of living healthy, I can't think of anything better you could do for them. And by doing this for yourself, you'll be giving them a healthier, happier, and longer-living mom.

It doesn't have to be drastic, by any means. ANYTHING you can do to improve your physical activity will boost your metabolism. Find something you enjoy, and ease into it. Set very small and attainable goals at first, so you don't feel stressed, indimidated or overwhelmed. Just walk to the corner and back the first day, for instance. Then the next day you might do that twice, or walk a little further. Take baby steps, and let your body and your energy level tell you when you want to do more (and you definitely will). If someone had told me in January that I'd be loving walking, running and biking in April, I would've laughed in their faces and thought they were crazy.

I guess I've gotten a little wordy, but I think there's nothing so important as this, not just with Atkins, but for every person.

If you ever need any help, advice or encouragement, feel free to PM me. Good luck, you can DEFINITELY do this!
