  • High Blood Pressure

I forgot to mention this one thing- I have high blood pressure. Is Atkins ok for this? My sister thinks that I am crazy for doing this and that I am going to be in serious trouble. I am not on any medication for HBP right now, actually I never was. It has just been in the past month or so that I have been 150 or more/110. I am on day 2 of induction and I just checked my BP and it was 156/110. Is this going to change?
Also I had asked about the reason why Atkins says do not drink caffeniated coffee, is it because it triggers sugar cravings?
Oh and another question- what vitamin/mineral supplements should I be taking?

    Re: High Blood Pressure

I can give you some insight to the HBP question as a first hand account. My mother was medicated for HBP when she started Atkins. She has extreme HBP. By the second or third week, she noticed it declining to the point where she needed to consult her doctor and go off her medicine. It's important to note that everyone reacts to this diet a little differently, and that is why Dr. Atkins always stressed that you should consult your physcian.

The best thing I can tell you to do is monitor it closely, maybe even everday. If it continues going up, I'd consult your doctor. If it goes down, then I'd say Atkins is the diet for you!
    Best Wishes!

      Re: High Blood Pressure

Check out the Vita Nutrient Solution/Supplements forum for advice and info about supplements. I need to do that, myself!
Female / Currently on Extended Induction (again), begun 6/2/08.

I did Extended Induction from 1/3 to 5/9 (2006) and lost 55 pounds, so I know I can do it again!

      The reason I quit...

        Re: High Blood Pressure

the Atkins plan is a natural diuretic both from the protein effect and many of the veggies in the acceptable foods lists.
We have a health section on HBP in the heaslth forums if you want to see the great success many ADBBers have had lowering their blood pessure to the point they are off meds.
