  • I'm a newbie

Hi all, I started the atkins diet on 4/05 after reading a lot from these boards. My starting weight was 365 lbs ( I've been between 345 and 365 for around
7 years now) which was my heavest weight ever. I weighted today and I weigh 339 lbs, so so far so good. I am amazed at to lack of hunger I have had so far. One question, is it ok to stay on induction ( low, low carbs ) for a extended period of time.

    Hi Samkat,

I'm Cher and I really wanted to just stop by and say hello. I'm pretty new to the board. Had a major setback after doing Adkins for a long time. So, I'm back on board trying to get back down to 130 (what I weighed 6 months ago). I'm sure you'll get a lot of answers regarding your questions to induction. The last time I did Adkins which was for the last 4 years (minus the last 4 - 5 months ) I stayed on Induction for the first 3 months. That was not the way Adkins recommended that you work the program. You're suppose to stay on 2 weeks and then add in carbs as suggested by the book. I was so excited by the 25 pound weight loss in the first 6 weeks that I wanted to continue losing that fast. But what happened was that I stopped losing for 3 strait months even though I kept staying on induction. What finally broke the plateau (for me) was adding in the next 5 grams of carbs. Just as Adkins had suggested that you do after the first 2 weeks. Everyone will probably have different thoughts about what to do. But, looking back. I wish I had just followed the book. Adkins knew what he was doing. However, if you are under a doctors supervision and they keep you on 20 grams and you're taking plenty of vitamins, it's probably fine. I knew some people who said the nurses at the Atkins clinic said it was fine to stay on a little longer as long as they were being monitored closely and were taking the extra supplements.

By the way. I'm joining the 14 day induction challenge that starts on May 1st. You can find it in the challenges section. Susan told me about it. If you decide to stay on induction, that might be a fun way to gain support while you're doing induction. I'm looking forward to it.

    Congratulations on hitting 339 from 365. <<<<<<<26 lbs>>>>>>>>>
    you're doing an incredible job!

Hi samkat and welcome to ADBB and to Atkins!

Congrats on your success so far, that's great!

About saying on Induction, take a look at Chapter 13, Are You Ready For Phase Two? ... it will help you with that decision. But, Dr Atkins says you can safely follow Induction for 6 months or more if you have a substantial amount of weight to lose.

And when you say low low carbs...are you following Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution 2002 Induction?

      Chat later!

            Hi, and welcome!

I've been on "Extended Induction" for nearly 4 months now, with no problems. I plan to stay on it another month or two (until I reach 200 pounds), then I'm going to gradually and carefully climb the OWL ladder.

            Good luck!
Female / Currently on Extended Induction (again), begun 6/2/08.

I did Extended Induction from 1/3 to 5/9 (2006) and lost 55 pounds, so I know I can do it again!

            The reason I quit...

Congratulations samkat01! I found that a lot of my so-called hunger was actually my body asking me for more fluids. I am so glad Atkins is working out for you!
