  • Hi, I'm Kim

    Hi,

I came across this website, when I was doing some research about Atkins. I've been surfing the forums for a few days, and I'm excited to join and start. I plan on starting Atkins May 22 (I'm still reading the book and taking notes). And it’s amazing to see how much dedication and inspiration comes from member to member. I look forward to joining this community and starting a healthier future.

    Thanks

Hi Kim and welcome to ADBB!

I see you're planning to start on Monday the 22nd. Any way you could start earlier? The reason I ask is because a very kind person advised me to start induction on a Friday so that I'd be over the "induction flu" (a period of weirdness when your body goes through carb detox) before I went back to work on Monday. Just a suggestion.

Good job reading the book. I look forward to watching your progress!

I would mind on starting friday, but I'm going on vacation this weekend..I was hoping to have my last all out meal. So this "induction flu" is your bodys way of adjusting to the meal plan?

            Re: Hi, I'm Kim

Kim, some people get "induction flu" and some don't. My personal experience: I started Atkins on Friday morning and got a serious headache late Friday afternoon. Saturday I just felt really weak and tired. By Sunday afternoon I was back to normal.

It's a natural adjustment when you think about it. Before Atkins, my body constantly craved carbs, and by giving into those cravings I kept my blood sugar on a roller coaster -- getting short energy bursts, then running out of fuel, then loading up again.

With Atkins, you give your body more long-term fuel so you can get off the roller coaster. Which is great -- but for the first couple of days your body might not catch on to what's going on.

Cutting out all those empty carbs is kind of like quitting smoking cold turkey, ya know? You might feel like cr*p at first, but the end result is worth it.

                Re: Hi, I'm Kim

Oh... My... Goodness. My induction flu was the worst ever. It went on for a full 2 weeks.

My first time on Atkins, it was so bad, I was putting gas in my car, and drove off, with the gas pump still in the tank. This most recent time, it wasn't that bad. Just a lot of phlegm, and headaches, and all around achiness. But, after the two weeks, my body adjusted, and I lost a good 14 pounds, I believe...

Would I do it again? You bet I would.

Granted, I don't plan on gaining that weight back, just to prove it...
