  • My Intro!

Hello, all! My name is Brandy, I'm 28 years old, diabetic (type 2) and severly obese. I joined this forum because I've been on and off diets all my life and I know from past experience that Atkins works for me. This time, I'm determined to stick with it and succeed. I had the mindset that once I was thin(ner) I could start eating whatever I wanted to because most of my friends were thin. I finally realized that my body is different. I need to find something and stick with it. Just as of last week, I ended a 5 1/2 year long relationship. While we were together, food was always a pleasure. We would go out to eat a lot and I would eat whatever I wanted, despite being diabetic. I was killing myself and knew it, but for some reason, I didn't care. The relationship wasn't going well for a long time, so I fed my soul with food when the love was missing. So now I have time to focus on myself and my health. I need support from people who are on this journey as well and I also hope to make a few friends Well, here are my measurements and goals:

SW- 425.0 (lost 38 pounds in a year just switching to water and unsweetened herbal tea w/o change in food)
    CW-383.0
    GW-210.0
Small Goals set in 40 lb increments.
Need to lose 173 lbs total.
    Height 5'10''
    Large Frame
    Bust- 52 in
    Waist- 55 in
    Hips- 66 in
Currently a size 28.. Just recently was able to fit back into jeans.

Here is me in August of '05 at 425-

Once I get a new one downloaded, I will post it. I definately made a little progress.

Hi Brandy, and welcome aboard! Congratulations on the 38 pounds you have already jettisoned from your life and body! More will come off and we will be here to cheer you all the way!

I am sure you are under the care of a doctor for your diabetes. Are you taking insulin? Be sure to have your doctor observe you carefully, since you will be deleting a lot, if not all, of the things that cause your blood sugar to spike and fall. Just be observant of how you feel and keep your doc in the know!

Are you exercising? Please do! It's instrumental in the success of this Way of Eating. Even walking around the block to start is . . . well . . . a start! We have excellent challenges in the Exercise Challenge forum that you might find motivating.

We are here to support you all the way. I hope to see fantastic successes in your near future!

Don't be afraid that your life will end,
be afraid that it will never begin.

                Re: My Intro!

I am under the care of a doctor. He said Atkins is great but he also added that I shouldn't stay on it for more than a month. I'm not on insulin, just Metformin and Lisinopril (for my kidneys, not high BP). One of them made my hairline recede! Anyway, I stopped taking them for now, and test my sugar 3-4 times a day instead of 2. When I run out of strips, I just pay out of pocket. Wow, how $$ they are! Today, 3 hours after lunch, my blood sugar was at 83! That's the lowest it's been since I was 18. When I was DX'd in October, I went to the Dr. For a recurring UTI.. On a whim, the Dr. checked my urine for sugar and sure enough, there were 1000 units in there. He checked my blood sugar, and I had fasted 12 hours, it was 370. I was shocked and very scared. My Dad died from diabetes aketoacidosis <sp?> at age 38. He was borderline that morning and by 3 pm, he was in a coma, 3:30, he was gone.. he was just Dx'd that day. My Mom also does a version of low carb and is able to keep her numbers down.. including her BP. When she was hard core Atkins, she was eatting like 4 eggs and ham for breakfast. The Dr. was shocked that all her numbers fell into healthy ranges. I have a theory that because we (mom and i)are close descendants of American Indians that are bodies are made to consume mostly meat and vegetables. And as far as excersize, I am lucky enough to work at a place that has a gym. Weights, treadmills, an elliptical, etc.. I haven't been there in awhile because I'm focusing on my diet, but in the next 2 weeks, I'm going to start a regimen. I just bought an MP3 player last night and a scale. I'm really serious this time. I'm not trying, I'm doing. While I'm doing this 99.9% for my health and well being, I have ulterior motives, such as my 10 yr HS reunion in Sept. and, although I would never date him again, an ex bf that needs to be made jealous! He he!
