  • This time, I have my doubts, but still hope

In 1989, I started Atkins and lost 40 lbs. I was a size 8-10 for years. Then I had some heart problems and am now taking a handfull of medications which I must take which I know makes losing weight difficult. Further, I'm getting a little long in the tooth so my metabolism is probably shutting down. Is there anyone out there who has the same challenge who has had success at losing? I'm so discouraged. I am back up to the 40 lbs over and cannot budge an ounce. Most of my clothes just sit all lonely in their closet.

    Any suggestions? Linda

Have you asked your doc about resuming Atkins? I don't know what heart problems you have, but for many of them doing Atkins under a Dr's supervision could be excellent.

Many factors that increase risks of heart disease are reduced with this diet. Not just because losing weight takes strain off your heart, but because of lowered BP, cholesterol, improved nutrition and exercise, and elimination of unhealthy habits as a result of following the plan.

I suddenly came aware that I have heart failure and while checking that out, I found I'd had a "silent" heart attack which seems to be more common in women. I do take about six medications for high blood pressure, heart rate and the like, but I am convinced that Atkins is the only way to go. In fact, my real successes come when I stay on the Induction phase, but even that's failing me right now. I have always been mostly faithful to Atkins, but I still jumped up 40 pounds in the last couple of years.

If you haven't already, please pick up a copy of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002 edition). There you may find new directions that if you're following an older version of Atkins like I was until finding this Board. The book (here AKA "DANDR") addresses many health conditions in greater detail.

I think you came to the right place!
