Hi! I go by Daiseymae, my real name is Evelyn. I have been on Atkins in the past, as well as almost every other diet that came along. Like many of us, I have gained and lost and gained again hundreds of pounds. It is different for me this time around. I am 63 years old and not getting any younger. I have major medical problems and 2 years ago I weighed 371 pounds. I couldn't walk 100 feet without major shortness of breath, profuse sweating and chest pain. It was a real effort to walk from our car to the door of the church we go to. I had coronary by-pass surgery in 1995 and continued having rapidly advancing coronary artery disease, one of the worst cases in my cardiologist's years of practice. My blood sugar was out of control, my liver was damaged, and my kidneys were in the process of shutting down, (the doctor told me that I was headed straight for dialysis within a year if I didn't change). Just about every major organ of my body was giving out from my obesity. (I hate that word!)
I have been a Christian since I was 8 years old and have had varying degrees of a relationship with God over the years, but have almost always been active in church, except a few years when I wasn't in church but was still connected to Him. I was thoroughly burned out on diets because they had not lasted long term. Something clicked in me about a year and a half ago and I decided to give it one more shot. I joined the program at my cardiologist's office. He has been my doctor and friend for more than 15 years, literally through thick and thin. He was doing the same program himself and I could see it was working for him.
The program, Metabolic Nutrition Program, has been around in the San Francisco bay area for more than 20 years. It was developed here by 2 endocrinologists, and until recently has been available only in this area. It is a "Very Low Calorie Diet" (VLCD) and not very well known. It is required that we go to group therapy on a weekly basis. There are varying intensities of the food plan, depending on your situation and wants. I chose the total fast, at the recommendation of my cardiologist. It has been very good for me. I have been on the total fast, eating only the supplement packages which come to about 700 calories a day since April 13, 1005, a little over 14 months. I have lost 170 pounds, now weighing 201 pounds. In 20 to 30 more pounds I will be ready to start the transition phase. My doctor wants me to go on a low carbohydrate diet for the rest of my life. He has mentioned South Beach phase 2 and The New Atkins Diet. I am not absolutely sure what I am going to do, but I lean heavily toward Atkins. My husband is changing his style of eating to the New Atkins and I think it will work much better if we are doing the same program.
This is why I am joining you on this message board. I will continue with group therapy, long term, even after I reach my goal, but I know how good it is to have support in between meetings as well. I look forward to getting to know you and have you get to know me.
Daiseymaae, AKA Evelyn.
ps Daiseymae is my black and white tuxedo (stray)cat that I love alot. Charlie Brown is my dog and I love him even more. He is the first animal that I have had that was really my own. The cat prefers my husband over me and that's fine. I have Charlie and he is a real mama's boy. He is chow mix, mostly chow and a year and a half old.
