  • I'm new...w/ lots of questions!!!

Hi everyone! I've been reading this website for about a week now, and it's sooo encouraging!!! First of all, my name is Angela and I'm 19 yrs old, in my 3rd year of college at Fayetteville State University. I am majoring in Middle Grades Education to become a teacher. I have always been overweight all my life, and the whole maternal line of my family are "bigger women". Well, it's time to break that chain, once and for all......I want to loose 100 pounds, and after that, maybe more. I first heard about Atkins through the popularity is rang out a few years ago. Once my grandparents tried it, and I saw the results, it was time to start on my own. So, now I am on Day 9 of induction, and I've lost 10 pounds. I know I shouldn't be weighing myself every single day..but, it's soooo addictive. But, since now I've let it out that I weigh myself everyday, I've been stuck at this 10 pounds for the last 3 days....I eat basically the same thing every day..maybe that's it..I don't know. Here's what I eat:

    Breakfast: Scrambled Sausgae and Eggs
Lunch:Either a chicken breast w/ mustard, or venison burger (my dad is a deer hunter) w/ mustard
Supper: Whatever meat I had for lunch, plus a salad.
    Snacks: pork skins or cheese

Here's my thing though.....I work full time on a second shift job, and so I work until 11:00. My supper break is at 6:30. I always eat supper then, and snack on pork skins until 9:30, my next break. and, I'm not even hungry, and I know the pork skins retain water, so I'm not giong to eat any anymore, after reading that they retain water.

I have a few questions that I can't find answers to, so please answer me back soon:
ok, first of all, is there a time when you can't eat late at night? I wake up around 8am, and don't go to bed until around 1 or 2am in the morning....so, 3 meals a day like atkins specifies isn't a lot, and if i do the 5 or 6 small meals...what is a small meal???

second of all, where is flax seed located in the grocery store? I have no idea what that is????

another question, I want to know about how long it takes someone to loose 100 pounds?

AND, last of all, I am trying to diet, and recently put down cigarettes 3 days ago...i'm DYING for something to put in my mouth, and that's why I snack on the pork skins at work when I'm not even hungry...because I crave something...the only thing I can think of is to get some crushed ice.....because I was chewing gum, until I got to that page in the Atkins book, where it clearly specifies..that is a HUGE NO-NO!..So, with that being said, is there anything I can snack or chew on that won't kill me on this diet to get rid of cigarette cravings????

And, I join the gym tomorrow (pay-day), and I'm truly excited...a lot of my friends are buying bicycles and going riding every weekend for hours at the time....so, i'm thinking about buying one too, if I can get a good, reasonable one. Well, you will def. be hearing more of me on here..and, i'll post my "before" pics I took up on here soon......... thanks
    Angela....

          Hi and welcome!

          Congrats on stopping smoking.

I think you need to add in more veggies. This isn't a no carb diet, and most of your net carbs should be coming from veggies. Salad isn't enough, and spread them throughout the day. Add some veggies to your eggs in the morning, eat a salad for lunch and add some veggies to your dinner.

For the cigarette cravings, how about some celery with some ranch dressing?

Flax seed can often be found in the organic/health food areas. You can also check out health food stores. One grocery store near me doesn't have it, but another one does.

You should be eating every 6 hours. Time of day shouldn't really matter, nor does it have to be a big meal. For smaller meals, just fix a small salad type plate a put a half a cup of veggies or a small salad and 3-4 oz of protein. If cooking, make full portions and store them and reheat.

Good luck! Be sure to read all the stickies!

Congrats on stopping smokin' for real. When I first started Atkins, I quit smoking as well. Strangely enough, my hunger for comfort foods made me forget how miserable I was for not smoking. To this day, I am still smoke free.
Sugar free candy helped me out for the first month. I feel sooo much better since I quit smoking. Again, congratulations!

I have been on Atkins since March and feel much better about myself, because I am doing something positive for myself. Good luck with your dieting and smoking...and, welcome to the boards!

Eat to when you feel full. I myself, after beating the induction phase, found myself being satisfied off of smaller amounts food. If you are counting carbs
correctly just eat to when you feel full.

As far as how long it will take you to lose 100 lbs., it depends on your genetics combined with the amount of exercise you do. I have lost 40 lbs since March. I would have actually lost more than that, but I eat regular meals on holidays, family meetings, and family birthdays. My cousin is an Atkins success story. He lost all his weight (over 100) within a little under a year.

Walking is a great way to burn carbs and burn fat. Drink alot of water as well.A medium pace of weight loss lets your body adjust to the changes. Sometimes, I don't see a weight change on the scale, but I feel a body change.

Re: I'm new...w/ lots of questions!!!

                HI Angela! Welcome!

I popped in to see if I can help to put your mind at ease about your work schedule and how nighttime eating can effect your loss. I have been working nights since I started my plan back in February. 11PM - 7AM five days a week. I live like a "normal person" on the weekends and tend to change my eating schedule around a lot. It really has not impacted my weight loss at all. I just eat my meals when I'm hungry - that could be at 2AM, or not until I get home around 8AM, depending on the day. I tend to go to bed around 9 or 10AM, so it is not uncommon for me to do so on a full stomach. So far, so good!

As for the cigarettes, I have tried numerous times to give up that habit during my Atkins adventure - so far, no luck. The sugar cravings become unbelievably intense, and tend to trigger binges. I got some fantastic advice to incorporate L-glutamine (herbal supplement found in pharmacies or health food stores) into my regimen, and that's the plan for my next try (July 2nd!). It's supposed to seriously curb those sweet cravings.

Anyhow, best of luck to you! Keep us posted on your progress!

Hello Angela! Welcome with open arms my friend! So glad you are here! I think you may be trying to do too much at once though sweetheart! I quit smoking a year ago, then I started atkins right away to not gain post smoking weight! The sugar cravings nearly killed me. I hate to tell you that though! I eventually stopped atkins and gave myself time to quit smoking! Cigs are soaked in sugar, and that is why you crave sugar so bad! If doing both is too hard for you, work on the smoking thing first! Atkins will be here when youre ready! So will all of us! Hugs to you on all your new journeys!

Hey Angela - I haven't been on the board for a while now - i was on atkins the 1st of Jan, 2006 and stayed on until the middle of March, i lost about 26lbs but for no reason I got off and here we are today in the end of June and I just recently started my diet again but this time I started taking trimspa pills to curve my appetite and so far NO CRAVINGS whatsoever, I don't know if you'd agree to taking pills but my grandmother did Herbalife all her life and it was the best thing she ever did. So I started the pills with Atkins and I already lost 10 lbs in 3 days!!! Hopefully this may help you!

Thanks to all you guys who responded...I have some GREAT news! I have quit smoking...I don't even crave a cigarette anymore, and I have never had a suger crave...which is a good thing, so I'm not really craving sugar like a lot of people say they do after quitting smoking...But, it's been 10 days...12 pounds gone...and I can SOOO feel that inches have dissapeared. Partly, because my pants are loose, and secondly...and I am SOOOOo happy to be saying this: two people at work, who had no clue i was on a diet, said, "angela, have you lost weight"? Don't you know that's the best feeling in the world.....OH YEAH! I joined the gym today, and I absolutely love it! I went w/ two friends, which makes it so much better. I have always enjoyed excercise and physical activities...until I started smoking. I have just never been so good on the diet end of the deal. BUT...now that I'm not smoking anymore, hopefully I'll get back into the gym and all, because I do enjoy it. Oh, and to bizzlekitty..I added more veggies today!! And, I must say, Ruby Tuesdays is a wonderful place to eat on the ATkins diet. They have a smart-eating menu that tells you how many carbs is in the food and you get to pick your sides...it's cool. Anyways..I'm rambling now, and hopefully someone will reply to me, because I LOVE THIS WEBSITE....I'M ADDICTED!!!!!!!!
                        Talk to ya'll soon..

Put away the scale for awhile. Go by your clothing sizes weighing yourself depresses you when its not showing you anything. And best of luck on the smoking I tried and failed but what helped me was sucking on one of those cocktail straws its about as long as a smoke! Good luck Im sure youll do great.
