  • My Intro. . . . . . . . . .

    Hello,
My name is Jen and I am new to this forum; I have been lurking for a week or so now. It seems I have come to the right place for support in my weight loss journey. I am starting Atkins Induction tomorrow 7/5/06. I was successful in losing weight with Atkins about 10 years ago, but lazily let it creep back on plus about 50lbs. So here I go again, this time it needs to be a permanent lifestyle change not just a diet. I know I have to do something, I just can't continue my weight gain or it will eventually be the end of me. I don't even recognize myself when I look in the mirror so I try not to, especially the full body view. Anyway, a little about me, I am 39 years old, I have a wonderful husband and daughter. My daughter just graduated from high school and is starting college in the fall. I haven't even told my husband that I am starting this diet because he will just roll his eyes and say "sure you are". He has seen me begin and fail soooooooooo many times, I am sure he thinks I can't/won't do it. But I am determined. It is time. I am missing out on so many things that I could be doing because I am so out of shape and tired all the time. And the saddest hardest part is both my daughter and my husband believe my obesity is taking a toll on me and will definitely shorten my life span. In the past couple of months both my husband and daughter have encouraged me to lose weight for my health, well being and happiness and of course so I will be around for them for years to come. Those conversations just broke my heart, and I know they are right. But I am sure as many of you understand the dreaded diet and weight loss roller coaster is such an overwhelming monster, that I have continued to put off beginning a healthy eating and exercise routine. I am hoping I will find the needed encouragement, strength and support from all of you to begin, contine and succeed with my weight loss goal. I am scared to death! I can't believe I have over 100lbs to lose, I am not sure how or when I let things get so out of control but it's time to get the control back. I think the worst part about Induction is those dreaded caffiene headaches. My weight loss goal for Induction is 13lbs. Thank you for listening, I look forward to meeting and chatting with all of you.

Hi Lucy. Welcome. We are very happy to have you join us in this quest to lose weight and get healthy. Do it for you! Don;t look back, just keep going. Sure, you've made mistakes. I can't even count the number of times I started other diets. I gave up because I was miserable and hungry. You don't ever have to be hungry or feel deprived while doing Atkins. The induction list is filled with delicious foods that you can eat till you are satisfied. Don't look at Atkins as another diet!

It isn't a diet. It is a new life-style. It is a permanent way of living and eating that will make you feel and look terrific. Keep a positive attitude. Make plans on what you will do when you are upset or meet negative obstacles. Make a grocery list of the foods on induction that you enjoy. Read through the recipe section to find new foods and ways of cooking that will help you get to your goal weight. Keep a journal and list the reasons you want to lose. Keep it handy to refer back to when you are tempted to quit or cheat.

You can do this!! There is a ton of people here who want to see you succeed. Together we are all encouraging each other and making it happen. The ADBB is filled with support and inspiration!!

Good luck! I am sure once your husband sees the changes in you, he will come around and be supportive, if not you always have the board!

          Re: My Intro. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks . I feel better already. I actually told my husband that I was starting tomorrow and asked him not to snack in front of me. He is a big snacker and I am always tempted. I gave him the list of foods that I will be eating from for at least the next 14-days and to my surprise he said he will eat what I eat at least when we are having meals together. That will make things easier. Of course he also said "or at least until you quit". So I asked him not to say discouraging things. Hopefully, once he sees that I am committed and sees that this way of eating works, he will be more positive.

Here's to day 1. I think when I am feeling tempted as I know I will these first few days I will just fill up on water. Can anyone tell me if it is ok to put lemon slices in the water? I am guessing No, as lemons aren't on induction.

            Hello Jen and Welcome!

Great job already on making the decision to start! It's okay, your husband will come around when he sees the results. My wife was the same way, now she is very very happy that I been losing so much. I started the day after Easter this year and have already lost 46 pounds. I've not been hungry, and I've drank water like a madman! You can do this, it is sooooo easy. You can still snack, just snack the right way! Go to www.fitday.com and you can create a profile for yourself and log everything you eat, it will give you totals, and you can watch yourself morph away! It is really fun.

Good luck, we're all here for you!

Thanks Scooter. Especially for recommending the Fitday site. What a great site for calculating carb intake and journaling.

Welcome to the first day of the rest of your life. Good luck, you can do it.
It is a life change and a totally new way of living life. Concentrate on what you can eat rather on what you can't.
My husband was EXACTLY the same as yours !! Now (50 lbs off in 6 months) he is extremely proud and is so encouraging - yours will be too!!

                    Re: My Intro. . . . . . . . . .

My hubby has been so supportive, if only that he eats what I eat when he's home. He eats whatever else he wants when he's away from home. And, at this point, I'm so OVER all the junk food, he occasionally has stuff here at the house that I couldn't care less about (like Ravioli, cokes, a whole case of strawberry frapuccino, texas toast, we even had girl scout cookies at one time, etc.) It took me a while to get to that point...and we still don't bring things like ice cream or regular cakes/donuts into this house. Sometimes I buy it for him, and put it in his truck to take with him (he's a truck driver). He's perfectly happy...and even my stepson doesn't care or complain that the junk isn't here. One way to really get him on board, and keep him as an ally is to search for DELICIOUS recipes. Use this forum, there are TONS with pictures and also use http://users3.ev1.net/~fontlady/ Man, there are some goooood recipes!

Hi Jen and welcome to ADBB and back to Atkins!

I'm sure the "intervention" was hard to hear, sometimes the truth hurts. But losing the weight is the best thing we can do for ourselves and losing it healthfully...whole foods and exercise and support! You might want to share your plan with them, they could help you stay strong; and with ADBB too, you'll have a lot of support and you're bound to suceed!

Best of luck and we'll see you around the board!
