Hello,
I wanted to stop in and introduce myself. I am a 43 year old, 5'7 wife of 15 years and mother of four wonderful children. I have battled weight the majority of my life. About 10 years ago I was down to 153 pounds and felt great, size 10's and all! I quit smoking several months after maintaining that weight level and gained over 40 pounds in less than 5 months. I started smoking again, but never recovered from the weight gain. Needless to say, over the past ten years I have yo-yo'd: down 20 up 25; down 15 up 20; etc. I am currently in a position of needing to lose close to 80 pounds.
I have failed multiple trials of low-fat, high carb diets. I may lose 5 pounds or so, but then go into a major stand still. I went to my doctor last week and showed him a month's worth of my eating and exercise (the entire month of June). I averaged 1300 calories per day (low fat, high carb) and was exercising at minimum 5 days per week, 45 minutes per session; working between 75 & 80% of my maximum heart rate. I lost not a single pound during the entire month. I am not on any medications. I did, however, quit smoking 6 months ago (gaining an additional 20 pounds). My metabolism appears to be non-existent. For those of you familiar with Basal Metabolic Weight (BMR), at my height and weight, a sedentary female supposedly should be consuming 2300 calories each day to sustain her current weight.
My doctor suggested that I try a low carb way of eating and see how it goes. My health is in good condition. My cholestrol (spelling), triglicerides, blood pressure, etc are all great. I will be going back to him monthly for further testing. Oh, I will not be returning to smoking either.
I am very much looking forward to seeing how this goes. I have been lurking around as a non-member for several days and you all seem very kind. Your successes are spectacular! I know you have worked very hard and you should all be very proud of your accomplishments. I want to be a success story too
.
Thanks for listening to my long story. You all seem to be a great group and I want to thank you for allowing me to be part of your group.
