  • Hello from a newbie

    Hi everyone,

I am a total newbie to Atkins - Weight Watchers has always been my weapon of choice, being the yo-yo dieter that I am. But to be completely honest, WW only worked once for me, back when I was 25. I lost 42 pounds to become a lifetime member. Since then, the weight slowly creeped up, but especially over the last five years or so, since my youngest son was born. Then I lost about the same amount on ediets with the basic plan, which is similar to ww. But I have gained it back again and now it has become really stubborn and I haven't been feeling good. And WW stopped working at all! I mean, a couple times I started back up and was PERFECT for the week and didn't lose anything, or even gained. Not only that, but was desperately craving almost all the time. Most recently, I was totally hooked on the WW fudgecicles and would eat a whole box every day, because they were only 1 point each. Was keeping myself to the very lowest calorie level on WW and stopped losing weight after 3 weeks, all the while my cravings were exploding.

See, I can be hungry - I can do that. But the cravings, I have a really really hard time with that.

I didn't realize it was the sugar and other junk carbs. Frankly, I decided to try Atkins out of desperation - because I heard you can eat as much as you want, and the deprivation thing obviously wasn't working for me. I actually did a week of induction before the book arrived. Then my paradigms starting changing. I read the book, well, devoured it really, in just a few days, and I was amazed to realize the poison I have been ingesting and feeding to my family. It was all starting to make sense - the bloating, the aches and pains, fatigue, lack of energy, INTENSE CRAVINGS that would have me almost robotically heading for the chocolate aisle and grabbing bags full to take home and pig out on.

My first two weeks on induction I felt like crap. I was miserable and tired and sick to my stomach. Had a weird sweet taste in my mouth and some cramps in my legs. Beyond that, I lost 5.5 pounds the first week and only 1/2 pound the second week. But I took it. I wasn't being strict enough, I realized. Even though I was remaining at 20 grams or under, I was ingesting some artificial sweeteners and probablly too much heavy cream. The weird thing was, I was much more able to put those things aside once I decided they were hindering me. Almost like I could just take it or leave it. This is a NEW feeling.

And all of a sudden one day last week I started feeling so.... incredibly GREAT. Like, more alive than I can ever remember feeling, and with more energy. What is this??? I went to workout the other day and got on the elliptical machine and I swear I think I was going to break the thing I was pedaling so hard, and I couldn't even get my heart rate up over 143, where usually it goes at least to 150 when I am working hard.

I feel so good, and lost 2 more lbs this past week. Not saying that I haven't been tempted by bad carbs or even just fruit, and I know that I will "hit the wall" one day sooner or later where I have the battle of my life to resist that temptation. I don't want to be naive. But right now, it seems like nothing could stop me. I'm not hungry and I don't have cravings at all 99% of the time, and when I do they are eety-beety-miniscule compared to what they used to be. And did I mention that I FEEL SO DOGGONE GOOD!??! This is such a new thing.
